About the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

## A direct walk into the Annapurna Sanctuary

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a direct sanctuary route in central Nepal that usually starts with a road journey from Pokhara toward the current trailhead near Jhinu Danda. From there, the path climbs through Chhomrong and the Modi Khola valley, with stone steps, suspension bridges and changing forest around every stage. Bamboo, Dovan, Himalaya and Deurali mark the transition from warm lower valleys into the cooler upper sanctuary; exact overnight stops can change with lodge space, weather and the pace of the group. Above Deurali, the route reaches Machhapuchhre Base Camp before continuing to Annapurna Base Camp at approximately 4,130 metres. Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli close in around the sanctuary, so the character of the walk changes from villages and terraced hillsides to rock, snow and a broad glacial amphitheatre. Gurung communities and teahouse life are part of the lower route, while the upper stages demand earlier starts, warm layers and more conservative pacing. The standard plan on this page takes 12 days in Nepal, including Kathmandu and Pokhara, seven trekking days and a contingency day. It is a moderate-to-challenging, non-technical trek suited to healthy walkers who can handle repeated ascents and descents, long stair sections and a rapid gain in altitude above Deurali. You do not need mountaineering skills, but fitness does not remove altitude-illness risk. Poon Hill is not assumed here: Ghorepani and Poon Hill are a separate longer variation that should be added deliberately, not blended into the direct ABC route.

Season, difficulty and altitude

## Choose the ABC Trek by conditions, not a single “best” month.

March to May usually brings warming days, flowering rhododendrons and busy spring departures. September to November often offers clearer post-monsoon conditions, although October can be crowded and November is colder. Winter can suit cold-ready trekkers who accept snow, short daylight and reduced lodge choice. Monsoon brings cloud, rain, wet stone, landslide or road disruption and less predictable views. The trek is non-technical but physically demanding: repeated staircases, long descents, five-to-seven-hour walking days and the quick rise from Deurali to Machhapuchhre Base Camp and ABC all matter. Fitness improves endurance but does not guarantee altitude tolerance. Report symptoms early, let the guide alter the stage and descend when health requires it. Read the detailed [altitude and acclimatization guidance](/annapurna-base-camp/annapurna-base-camp-altitude-sickness) and [training plan](/annapurna-base-camp/annapurna-base-camp-trek-training) before booking.

Practical planning

## Keep the useful details close to the route.

Avalanche awareness, road access, sanctuary regulations, teahouse packing and incidental cash needs complete your preparation.

## The safety margin is in sleeping altitude and valley terrain

Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) reaches an elevation of **4,130 metres**, significantly lower than Everest Base Camp or Larkya La. However, the route's primary physical demands stem from relentless stone staircases and a rapid sleeping-elevation gain inside the narrow Modi Khola gorge.

Between Chhomrong (**2,170 m**) and Dovan (**2,600 m**), trekkers descend roughly 2,500 stone steps to the Chhomrong Khola before climbing steeply up the opposing valley wall. Above Deurali (**3,200 m**), the trail enters a constricted glacial valley before opening into the sanctuary at Machhapuchhre Base Camp (**3,700 m**) and ABC.

During late winter and spring (February to April), the section between Deurali and Machhapuchhre Base Camp passes directly below active avalanche chutes originating from Hiunchuli and Annapurna South. In heavy snow conditions, guides frequently route along the opposite riverbank or hold groups at Deurali until midday avalanche hazard subsides. Never push past Deurali in active snowfall or warming afternoon sun without a guide's clearance. For symptoms and acclimatization strategy, read the [altitude sickness guide](/annapurna-base-camp/annapurna-base-camp-altitude-sickness).

## Pokhara Transfers and Trailhead Logistics

The gateway for all Annapurna Sanctuary trekking is the lakeside city of **Pokhara** (**822 m**). Travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara can be accomplished either by a **25-minute domestic flight** with panoramic views of the Manaslu and Annapurna massifs, or via the **Prithvi Highway** (6 to 8 hours by tourist bus or private car, subject to road maintenance and traffic).

From Pokhara, the practical trailhead begins after a **2.5- to 3-hour private 4WD jeep drive** (or 4-hour local bus) toward the current roadhead near **Jhinu Danda / Siwai** or **Nayapul / Birethanti**. The massive Jhinu Danda suspension bridge (287 metres long, suspended 135 metres above the river) connects directly to the trail leading to Chhomrong. The natural riverside hot springs at Jhinu Danda provide a classic recovery stop on the return descent. Consult the [transport planning guide](/annapurna-base-camp/pokhara-to-trailhead-transport) for current roadhead access points.

## Accommodation and Daily Teahouse Living

Accommodation throughout the Annapurna Sanctuary consists of family-run mountain lodges. In lower gateway villages like Ghandruk and Chhomrong, teahouses offer private twin rooms, attached Western-style flush toilets, solar hot showers and electrical sockets.

Above Bamboo, the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) strictly limits the number of lodge building licenses to preserve the fragile ecological balance of the sanctuary. Consequently, lodges at Dovan, Himalaya, Deurali, Machhapuchhre Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp have a fixed, limited number of rooms. During peak spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) trekking seasons, individual private rooms are unavailable in the upper sanctuary; trekkers sleep in functional **4- to 6-bed dormitory rooms** with communal washrooms.

Dining halls are heated in the evening with kerosene or central heaters. Bedroom temperatures at Annapurna Base Camp drop between **-5°C and -12°C (10°F to 23°F)** at night; carrying a **three-to-four-season sleeping bag rated to -10°C (14°F)** ensures restful sleep. Review village lodge setups in the [accommodation guide](/annapurna-base-camp/annapurna-base-camp-accommodation).

## Sacred Valley Culture, Food and Drinking Water

The upper Annapurna Sanctuary is revered as a sacred domain by local Gurung and Magar communities, who believe it to be the abode of the deities *Panchche Devi* and *Annapurna* (the goddess of food and nourishment).

By long-standing local community decree, **meat, poultry, eggs and animals are strictly forbidden beyond Chhomrong**. Respecting this spiritual restriction is mandatory for all visitors. Teahouse menus in the upper sanctuary are entirely vegetarian, focusing on fresh, energy-dense staples:

- **Dal bhat:** Steamed white rice, lentil soup, spiced vegetable curry and pickled greens (served with unlimited refills).

- **Sherpa / Tibetan stew (Shyakpa):** Hearty vegetable broth with handmade pulled noodles, potatoes and garlic.

- **Garlic soup:** Traditionally consumed twice daily across the Himalaya to assist blood thinning and acclimatization.

- **Porridge and Tibetan bread:** Slow-burning complex carbohydrates for sustained trail energy.

Drinking water is tightly managed by ACAP to eliminate plastic bottle waste. Trekkers cannot purchase single-use disposable plastic water bottles inside the sanctuary. Instead, refill personal wide-mouth bottles with safe UV-treated or boiled drinking water at ACAP community Safe Drinking Water Stations (NPR 100–250 per litre), or purify tap water using chlorine dioxide tablets or a 0.1-micron hollow-fiber filter. Learn more in the [food and water guide](/annapurna-base-camp/annapurna-base-camp-food-and-water).

## Trail-Life Out-of-Pocket Costs and Cash Requirements

While a packaged trek covers permits, transport, standard teahouse rooms and meals, on-trail personal amenities must be settled individually in cash:

Swipe to view table →

| Trail Amenity | Typical Cost (NPR) | Approximate USD | Operational Reality |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hot Shower (Gas / Solar) | NPR 300–600 | $2.25–$4.50 | Available up to Deurali; bucket hot water at ABC |
| Device / Power Bank Charging | NPR 200–400 | $1.50–$3.00 | Charged per hour or per unit in the dining hall |
| Wi-Fi Access Voucher | NPR 300–500 | $2.25–$3.75 | 24-hour prepaid voucher (AirJaldi or Everest Link) |
| Purified Drinking Water (1 L) | NPR 100–250 | $0.75–$2.00 | Available at ACAP safe drinking water stations |
| Jhinu Danda Hot Springs Entry | NPR 150–200 | $1.15–$1.50 | Local community maintenance fee at riverside pools |
| Guide / Porter Tipping | $10–$15 / $8–$12 per day | Group total | Standard pooled gratuity presented at Pokhara farewell |

There are **no functional ATMs on the trail** above Nayapul or Jhinu Danda. Trekkers should withdraw **NPR 20,000 to NPR 28,000 per person** in cash in Pokhara before heading to the trailhead to comfortably cover hot showers, battery charging, hot drinks, snacks and tips. For complete budget comparisons, review the [ABC trek cost guide](/annapurna-base-camp/annapurna-base-camp-trek-cost).

## ACAP Permits and Licensed Guide Regulations

Trekkers heading into the Annapurna Sanctuary require two official travel documents:

- **Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP):** NPR 3,000 per person (+ 13% VAT) for foreign nationals; NPR 1,500 for SAARC citizens. Issued by the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) at the Tourism Board offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

- **Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Card:** NPR 2,000 per person for foreign nationals. Issued through registered trekking agencies.

Under the Nepal Tourism Board's safety mandates, all foreign trekkers must be accompanied by a **licensed Nepal trekking guide** booked through a government-registered trekking agency. Checkpoints operate at Birethanti, Jhinu Danda and Chhomrong, where guide credentials, park permits and client passport details are logged. Verify current documentation requirements on the [permits guide](/annapurna-base-camp/annapurna-base-camp-trek-permits).

Questions travellers ask

## Annapurna Base Camp Trek FAQ

How many days does the Annapurna Base Camp Trek take?+
The standard direct itinerary on this page takes 12 days in Nepal, including Kathmandu, Pokhara, seven trekking days, the return to Pokhara and a contingency day. A slower or Poon Hill variation needs additional time.
How high is Annapurna Base Camp?+
Annapurna Base Camp is approximately 4,130 metres above sea level. Machhapuchhre Base Camp is lower, but the upper sanctuary still requires conservative pacing and attention to symptoms.
How difficult is the ABC Trek?+
It is a moderate-to-challenging, non-technical trek. Stone staircases, repeated ascents and descents, cold, long days and the rapid rise above Deurali make it demanding even without climbing equipment.
Can beginners do the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?+
A healthy beginner can complete it with consistent preparation, a gradual itinerary, suitable equipment and a willingness to stop or descend when health or conditions require it.
Is Poon Hill part of the ABC Trek?+
Not automatically. This page describes the direct sanctuary route from the Pokhara road approach through Chhomrong. Ghorepani and Poon Hill are an optional longer variation and should be priced and scheduled separately.
What permits are needed for Annapurna Base Camp?+
The standard route normally uses an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit and a TIMS card arranged through the operator. Current fees and guide requirements should be reconfirmed before departure.
Where does the ABC Trek start?+
The direct itinerary commonly drives from Pokhara toward the current roadhead near Jhinu Danda, then walks toward Chhomrong. Road construction and local conditions can change the practical starting point.
Is Annapurna Base Camp harder than Everest Base Camp?+
They are different challenges. ABC is lower and usually shorter, but its stone steps and rapid upper-valley gain can be tiring; EBC involves a longer high-altitude commitment. Compare the actual itinerary, not only the maximum altitude.

A slower or Poon Hill variation needs additional time."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"How high is Annapurna Base Camp?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Annapurna Base Camp is approximately 4,130 metres above sea level. Machhapuchhre Base Camp is lower, but the upper sanctuary still requires conservative pacing and attention to symptoms."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"How difficult is the ABC Trek?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"It is a moderate-to-challenging, non-technical trek. Stone staircases, repeated ascents and descents, cold, long days and the rapid rise above Deurali make it demanding even without climbing equipment."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Can beginners do the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"A healthy beginner can complete it with consistent preparation, a gradual itinerary, suitable equipment and a willingness to stop or descend when health or conditions require it."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Is Poon Hill part of the ABC Trek?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Not automatically. This page describes the direct sanctuary route from the Pokhara road approach through Chhomrong. Ghorepani and Poon Hill are an optional longer variation and should be priced and scheduled separately."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"What permits are needed for Annapurna Base Camp?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"The standard route normally uses an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit and a TIMS card arranged through the operator. Current fees and guide requirements should be reconfirmed before departure."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Where does the ABC Trek start?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"The direct itinerary commonly drives from Pokhara toward the current roadhead near Jhinu Danda, then walks toward Chhomrong. Road construction and local conditions can change the practical starting point."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Is Annapurna Base Camp harder than Everest Base Camp?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"They are different challenges. ABC is lower and usually shorter, but its stone steps and rapid upper-valley gain can be tiring; EBC involves a longer high-altitude commitment. Compare the actual itinerary, not only the maximum altitude."}}]},{"@type":"ItemList","@id":"https://www.nepaltibetbhutan.com/annapurna-base-camp#itemlist","name":"Annapurna Base Camp Trek itinerary","numberOfItems":12,"itemListElement":[{"@type":"ListItem","position":1,"name":"01: Arrive in Kathmandu; briefing and equipment check","description":"1,400 m · — · Trekking day"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":2,"name":"02: Travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara","description":"822 m · — · Transfer / trek"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":3,"name":"03: Drive to Jhinu Danda; trek to Chhomrong","description":"2,170 m · 3–4 hours · Transfer / trek"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":4,"name":"04: Trek from Chhomrong to Bamboo","description":"2,310 m · 5–6 hours · Trekking day"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":5,"name":"05: Trek from Bamboo to Deurali","description":"3,200 m · 5–6 hours · Trekking day"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":6,"name":"06: Trek via MBC to Annapurna Base Camp","description":"4,130 m · 5–6 hours · Trekking day"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":7,"name":"07: Descend from Base Camp to Bamboo","description":"2,310 m · 6–7 hours · Trekking day"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":8,"name":"08: Trek from Bamboo to Jhinu Danda","description":"1,780 m · 5–6 hours · Trekking day"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":9,"name":"09: Walk to the road and drive to Pokhara","description":"822 m · 1–2 hours · Transfer / trek"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":10,"name":"10: Contingency or recovery day in Pokhara","description":"822 m · — · Trekking day"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":11,"name":"11: Return to Kathmandu","description":"1,400 m · — · Transfer / trek"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":12,"name":"12: Departure","description":"— · — · Transfer / trek"}]}]}
