# Annapurna Base Camp Fitness Guide: Hills, Descents, Recovery and Altitude

You should be able to walk for several hours on consecutive days, climb sustained hills or stairs and recover while carrying a light daypack. Build capacity gradually, practise descents and note that fitness improves effort but does not guarantee acclimatization or prevent illness.

**8 weeks**Training runway

**Stairmaster**Key workout

**5–6 hours**Target walking day

**5 kg**Daypack weight

## What the ABC route asks of you

ABC combines repeated stone steps, descents, forest trail, changing weather and higher sleeping altitude. The strongest preparation is consistent movement over time, not one maximal workout shortly before departure.

## Build aerobic capacity

- Walk or use steady cardio three to four times each week.

- Add one longer outing and gradually extend time on feet.

- Practise at a pace that allows conversation and controlled breathing.

- Use the shoes, socks and daypack that will travel with you.

## Train for hills and descents

Swipe to view table →

| Training element | Why it matters |
| --- | --- |
| Uphill walking or stairs | Builds sustained climbing capacity |
| Controlled descents | Prepares knees, calves and balance for repeated steps |
| Back-to-back days | Tests recovery across a trek-like sequence |
| Light daypack | Builds familiarity without turning training into a load test |

## Strength, balance and mobility

- Use lower-body, core and balance exercises twice weekly.

- Practise step-ups, split squats or comparable movements within safe limits.

- Include ankle and hip mobility if stiffness changes your walking pattern.

- Progress gradually and stop for pain that changes your gait.

## Taper and arrive ready

Reduce training volume in the final week, keep gentle movement, sleep well and do not test new equipment at altitude. Arrange a clinician review before travel if you have a heart, lung or blood condition, pregnancy, recent surgery, a history of severe altitude illness or uncertainty about medication.

## Fitness is not acclimatization

Training improves endurance and confidence, but it does not guarantee a safe response to altitude. Follow a paced itinerary, report symptoms early and accept a rest, descent or route change when health or conditions require it.

## Make the safety decision early

Before you book or set out for fitness guide, keep these details visible in the plan: Training runway: 8 weeks; Key workout: Stairmaster; Target walking day: 5–6 hours; Daypack weight: 5 kg

Agree on the point at which the plan changes. In the Fitness guide, a lower route, a rest day, a different transfer or an early return is a normal planning option when symptoms, weather or conditions change.

- Ask what the guide or operator will do if the main plan cannot continue.

- Keep medication, documents, communication and warm layers accessible.

- Check the current source and insurance wording before relying on a safety claim.

## What changes the plan

For fitness guide, agree the change point before departure. In the Fitness guide, a lower route, rest day, different transfer or early return is a normal option when symptoms, weather or access change. The operator should explain who makes that decision and how the group stays together.

In the Fitness guide, keep the safety plan practical: name the next lower sleeping point, local contact, transport option and insurer process. Do not rely on a helicopter, phone signal or fixed schedule as the only response to a problem.

- Save emergency contacts, insurance details and medication information offline.

- Tell the guide early when health, weather or footing changes.

- Treat a safe change of plan as part of the itinerary, not as a failure.

Useful answers

## Frequently asked questions

How many weeks should I train?+
Eight to twelve weeks is a useful planning runway for many trekkers, but the right duration depends on your current base, health and route. Progress gradually rather than following one rigid target.
Can gym training replace hills?+
In the Fitness guide, strength work is useful, but include regular uphill and downhill walking so feet, calves, knees and pacing adapt to the trail.
How much should I carry in training?+
Train with a light daypack that matches the personal items you will carry. Agree the porter load and baggage arrangements with the operator in advance.
Does fitness prevent altitude sickness?+
No. Fitness supports walking but does not reliably prevent altitude illness. Sleeping altitude, ascent rate and individual susceptibility remain important.
When should I stop training?+
Stop and seek appropriate advice for chest pain, unusual breathlessness, fainting, severe dizziness, an acute injury or symptoms that worsen with exercise.
