Safe water can be obtained through boiled water or properly treated tap or spring water. Hydration matters, but forcing excessive water is not safe or helpful.
Safe drinking-water options
- Buy boiled water from the lodge and transfer it to reusable bottles.
- Treat clear local water with an appropriate filter, purifier or chemical method used according to its instructions.
- Keep bottles inside your sleeping bag or jacket when freezing is likely.
- Avoid creating unnecessary plastic waste with repeated single-use bottles where reusable treatment options are available.
Eating when altitude reduces appetite
Appetite can fall at altitude even as the body needs energy. Smaller, familiar meals and carbohydrate-rich snacks are often easier than rich or heavily spiced food.
Tell your guide about persistent nausea, vomiting or inability to eat or drink because these can accompany altitude illness. Hydration alone does not treat acute mountain sickness.
Food hygiene, water sources and lodge operations change. Choose busy kitchens, freshly cooked hot meals and the treatment method recommended by your guide.
Useful answers
Frequently asked questions
Is vegetarian food easy to find?
Yes. Vegetarian dal bhat, noodles, rice, potatoes, soup and eggs are widely available and are often the most practical choices.
Should I eat meat high on the trail?
Many trekkers limit meat above Ghorepani because refrigeration and transport are difficult. Choose freshly cooked food and follow current local guidance.
How much water should I drink?
Drink regularly according to thirst, exertion and medical guidance. Avoid both dehydration and excessive forced intake; urine and symptoms provide useful context but are not perfect measures.
