What this means

Early HAPE can look like an unusually poor response to exertion. Progression to breathlessness at rest, blue lips or bloody or frothy sputum is an emergency.

What to do on the trail

  • Breathlessness that is disproportionate to the effort or worsening quickly
  • Persistent cough, chest congestion or crackling breathing
  • Markedly reduced walking ability compared with companions
  • Breathlessness at rest, confusion, blue lips or bloody sputum
Field note

Stop exertion, arrange urgent descent and medical support, and use oxygen only when directed and available. Do not wait for a planned morning departure.
