Pack in layers for changing temperatures, keep critical items in your daypack and separate essential documents and medication from checked or porter baggage.

Carry in the daypack

  • Water, treatment method and snacks
  • Warm layer, waterproof shell, hat and gloves
  • Sun protection, phone, power bank and offline maps
  • Personal medication, first-aid basics and insurance contacts

Porter or duffel items

  • Layered trekking clothes and spare socks
  • Sleeping bag rated for expected conditions
  • Comfort items, toiletries and lodge shoes
  • Documents protected in a waterproof pouch and a labelled bag

Pack less, test everything

Use broken-in boots, test gloves and rainwear, and weigh the bag before departure. A lighter, well-organized kit is more useful than a large bag full of rarely used items.
