The direct route should remain flexible because weather, trail conditions and altitude response can change the overnight plan.
Recommended day-by-day itinerary

Why pacing still matters
The direct trail remains below 3,200 metres until Deurali, then gains altitude quickly through Machhapuchhre Base Camp to ABC. Start early, walk slowly and treat worsening symptoms conservatively.
Fitness helps with stone steps and long walking days but does not prevent altitude illness. A guide may change the final overnight point or descend when health or weather requires it.
Where to keep flexibility
- Keep at least one spare day after the Pokhara road transfer rather than scheduling an international departure immediately afterward.
- Choose Bamboo, Dovan or Himalaya according to lodge availability and how the group feels.
- Treat the Base Camp overnight as conditional on health, trail conditions and open accommodation.
- A helicopter return is separately priced, weather-dependent and never a substitute for safe ascent pacing.
This itinerary is a planning framework. Your guide may adjust the walking plan for weather, trail conditions, health, road access or lodge availability.
Useful answers
Frequently asked questions
Can the ABC trek be completed in 12 days?
Yes. This 12-day Nepal plan includes seven trekking days, Kathmandu and Pokhara transfers, plus one flexible day. Slower alternatives are sensible for some travellers.
Can I add Poon Hill?
Yes, but the Ghorepani–Poon Hill extension usually needs two or three extra trekking days to avoid an unnecessarily rushed program.
Where is the hardest day?
The climb from Deurali through Machhapuchhre Base Camp to ABC is usually the most demanding because of the altitude gain, cold and exposure.
