Overland by Road: The primary land gateway is the border town of Jaigaon (Alipurduar district, West Bengal), which directly borders Phuentsholing in Bhutan. The nearest Indian railway junctions are Hasimara (18 km, 30 mins by taxi) and New Alipurduar (55 km, 1.5 hrs). From Phuentsholing, the scenic mountain highway climbs 165 km through Gedu and Chhukha to reach Thimphu in 5 to 6 hours. - Direct flights: Kolkata (1 hr), Delhi (2 hrs 20 mins), and Guwahati (45 mins) to Paro Airport. - Land gateway: Jaigaon to Phuentsholing pedestrian border terminal open daily from 06:00 to 22:00. - Train connections: Board trains to Hasimara (18 km from Jaigaon) or New Alipurduar railway stations. - Scenic highway: Phuentsholing to Thimphu is 165 km of well-paved mountain highway taking 5–6 hours. ## Currency rules, Rupee acceptance, and vegetarian dining Financial logistics in Bhutan are remarkably straightforward for Indian citizens.
