How to use this itinerary
This ten-day western route is a planning framework, not a promise that every road transfer will take the same time. It works best with an appropriate vehicle, certified local services and a protected night in Paro before departure.
The route gives Paro, Thimphu and Punakha two nights each, one night in Phobjikha and a final Paro night. This avoids the unrealistic idea that visitors can explore Bumthang and return to Paro for an international departure in one day.
Day-by-day pacing notes
- Keep the first afternoon light after landing in Paro.
- Place Tiger's Nest after an easier day and allow a flexible 4–6 hours.
- Cross Dochu La on the Thimphu–Punakha road, not on the Paro–Thimphu transfer.
- Treat the Gangtey–Paro return as a full road day.
- Ask before photographing inside monasteries and dzongs.
How to add Bumthang correctly
From Gangtey, continue to Trongsa and Bumthang with at least two nights in the Bumthang valleys. Return overland with another protected stop, or use a domestic flight only after its schedule and baggage conditions are confirmed. A 12–14 day total is much more credible than inserting Bumthang into the final two days of a ten-day first trip.
