Assistance is a service choice; it does not remove the traveller’s responsibility to check names, dates, fees, documents and current rules. ## Visa regulations, the Tashel portal, and application timeline Indian citizens require a permit rather than a standard tourist visa, while visitors from Bangladesh and the Maldives require visas under their respective applicable consular channels. All other international passport holders must hold an approved electronic visa (e-Visa) prior to boarding flights to Paro International Airport or entering via overland borders. Applications are submitted online either directly by the traveler via the official Department of Immigration portal (Tashel system) or through a registered, licensed Bhutanese tour operator. Requirements include a passport valid for at least six months from departure, a digital passport-style photograph, proof of comprehensive travel insurance, and payment of the one-time non-refundable USD 40 visa application fee alongside full SDF dues for the planned duration of stay. - Pre-approved e-Visa clearance letter must be presented at airline check-in before boarding flights to Paro. - One-time non-refundable visa application fee of USD 40 per traveler. - Passport must have minimum 6 months validity from the date of departure from Bhutan. - Standard visa processing time is 5 to 7 working days following receipt of full SDF payment. ## The mandatory licensed guide rule and independent travel restrictions A cornerstone of Bhutan's 'High Value, Low Volume' tourism policy is the mandatory accompaniment of a licensed Bhutanese tour guide. Foreign travelers cannot rent cars for self-driving or travel independently between valleys without an accredited guide and certified commercial tourist vehicle. Your licensed guide meets you at Paro Airport or the land border gate in Phuentsholing and accompanies your party throughout the itinerary. Guides handle monument admission, translate during community visits, facilitate hiking safety at high elevations, and navigate police road checkposts.
