## Who this short program is for

Khare is already high. This short program is for climbers who have trekked and acclimatized to the Hinku or Khumbu, not for a visitor arriving directly from Kathmandu. The guide should assess health, sleep, appetite, boots, crampons, harness, helmet, ice axe and ascender before deciding whether the route can proceed.

Before booking Mera Peak from Khare, climbers should document recent sleeping altitudes, technical rope experience, and insurance coverage. A short itinerary removes approach days; it does not remove acclimatization requirements.

- Do not arrive in the starting village from Kathmandu and plan to summit the next morning.

- Keep one extra weather or recovery day when the wider schedule permits.

- The guide can reduce the objective, descend or cancel the summit without treating that as a service failure.

## Route and difficulty profile

The route is short only in calendar terms. The upper mountain remains a technical, high-altitude objective whose snow, glacier, fixed-line and descent demands must be checked on arrival.

Swipe to view table →

| Factor | Short-program planning answer |
| --- | --- |
| Route character | Moraine and glacier approach, optional high camp, long snow slopes and a cold descent; the glacier line is seasonal. |
| Altitude | 6,654 m; Khare is already high, so the short program requires recent Hinku or Khumbu acclimatization. |
| Summit-day demand | Often 10–14+ hours from high camp, or longer when the team uses a lower start or changes the descent. |
| Stop or retreat points | Khare, base camp and high camp; the leader can descend before the glacier or summit slope is committed. |

## Day navigator

Each day remains separate because a short package still has distinct health, approach, summit and departure decisions.

Swipe to view table →

| Day | Route | Altitude | Distance / time | Accommodation | Operational focus |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Day 1 | Arrive in Khare | 5,045 m sleep | 2–4 hours briefing | Lodge | Health/acclimatization assessment, boot/crampon fit, harness, helmet, ice axe, ascender and weather review. |
| Day 2 | Khare to Mera Base Camp / Mera La | 5,045 m → 5,300–5,400 m | 4–6 hours / 5–7 km | Tented base camp | Steep moraine and glacier approach; camp setup, route check and early rest. |
| Day 3 | High Camp → Summit → Khare / lower camp | 5,700 m → 6,654 m → lower camp | 10–14+ hours | Khare or lower camp | Use high camp when operationally appropriate; direct Base Camp–summit–Khare is not assumed. |
| Day 4 | Depart Khare | 5,045 m → Thangnak / lower Hinku | 4–6 hours | Lodge | Descend after a health check; protect a lower recovery day and transport buffer. |

## Day 1 — Arrive in Khare

Khare is already high. This short program is for climbers who have trekked and acclimatized to the Hinku or Khumbu, not for a visitor arriving directly from Kathmandu. The guide should assess health, sleep, appetite, boots, crampons, harness, helmet, ice axe and ascender before deciding whether the route can proceed.

## Day 2 — Khare to Mera Base Camp / Mera La

The Khare–Mera La/base-camp move crosses steep moraine and glacier terrain. Use the current crampon and rope-up point, hydrate before the climb and set camp early. The group should review the high-camp plan at dinner; a direct summit day from base camp is not published as a default because it can be too long.

## Day 3 — High Camp → Summit → Khare / lower camp

The recommended conservative operating pattern uses Mera High Camp when the leader judges it appropriate. Start around 1:00–2:00 am, rope up on the glacier, manage crevasse spacing and climb the long snow slopes before wind and cloud increase. Turn around on time and descend to Khare or a lower camp according to daylight, weather and health.

## Day 4 — Depart Khare

Depart toward Thangnak or the lower Hinku after food and a health check. The operator should explain what happens if a climber needs a recovery day, if the route closes or if transport is delayed; a short package still needs a longer-approach fallback.

## Short-package inclusions

Treat the following as a sample checklist. The signed quote should name what is supplied, rented, insured and refundable.

- Qualified climbing guide

- Meals during the climbing program

- Group climbing equipment

- Personal climbing equipment where provided by the operator

- Current climbing permit

- Guide insurance

- Base/high-camp tents and logistics where included in the written quote

## Short-package exclusions

These exclusions are common and must be checked against the operator’s current proposal.

- Travel to and from the starting village

- Personal expenses and drinks beyond the written meal plan

- Client climbing and travel insurance

- Rescue or evacuation unless explicitly insured or included

- Tips

- Costs caused by weather, transport delays, illness or itinerary changes

- Climbing boots unless the operator confirms the correct size and availability

- Anything not explicitly named under inclusions

## Equipment, permit and insurance checklist

A short program removes approach days, not the equipment and document decisions. Confirm every item before travelling to the starting village; a rented boot, crampon or harness that does not fit can end the climb before it starts.

Swipe to view table →

| Planning line | What to confirm |
| --- | --- |
| Boots and crampons | Personal or rental after an in-person fit check; Khare is not the place to discover incompatibility. |
| Harness, helmet, ice axe and ascender | Operator or rental only when the exact fit, model and leader’s system are confirmed. |
| Glacier rope and fixed-line system | Leader-system dependent; proposals should specify rope-team spacing, ascender use and descent method. |
| High-altitude layers, gloves, goggles and headlamp | Personal; carry tested insulation and spare hand protection for the long summit day. |
| Tents, camp kitchen and group equipment | Usually supplied at base/high camp when included in the written quote. |
| Permit and insurance | Confirm the current peak permit, approach documents and insurance covering 6,654 m technical climbing, treatment and evacuation. |

## Short-program cost planning

A short itinerary is not automatically a low-risk or low-cost climb. Compare the complete operating system and review contingency protocols for closed summit windows.

Swipe to view table →

| Cost line | What to confirm |
| --- | --- |
| Guide and staff | Named climbing guide, glacier ratio, staff insurance and high-camp support. |
| Permit and protected area | Current peak permit plus Khumbu or Hinku approach documents; confirm the issuing authority. |
| Camp and meals | Base/high-camp tent, kitchen, water, toilets, communications and meals included or separate. |
| Equipment | Which glacier, fixed-line and personal items are supplied or rented; confirm boots before departure. |
| Insurance and rescue | 6,654 m technical-climbing treatment, evacuation, repatriation, cancellation and delay cover. |
| Contingency | Weather, illness, route closure, extra camp nights and a lower-camp descent plan. |

## Altitude profile

The short program starts high; that is why previous acclimatization is a prerequisite rather than a marketing footnote.

Swipe to view table →

| Stage | Sleeping / highest altitude | Daily change | Profile |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Khare | 5,045 m sleep | Arrival | ▆ |
| Base Camp | 5,300–5,400 m | +250–350 m | ▇ |
| High Camp | 5,700–5,800 m | +300–500 m | ▇▇ |
| Summit | 6,654 m | +950 m / descent | ████ |

## Safety and turnaround

AMS, HAPE/HACE, cold injury, crevasses, rockfall, high wind and fatigue remain possible even when the approach has already been completed. The guide should set the current rope, departure and turnaround plan after reviewing the forecast and route.

- If a climber develops worsening headache, breathlessness at rest, confusion, an unsteady gait or a cough that is getting worse, descend and seek medical help.

- Helicopter rescue depends on weather, landing, aircraft performance, authorization and insurance; it is not the short itinerary’s default transport.

- If weather prevents the summit, descend or wait within the protected plan. A summit is never guaranteed.

## Short-program FAQs

| Question | Answer |
| --- | --- |
| Can I climb Mera Peak directly from Khare? | Yes, when the climber has already trekked and acclimatized to Khare and the guide confirms the current route. |
| Does the Mera short program use High Camp? | Not in every operation, but it is often the more realistic choice for protecting summit-day duration and retreat margin. |
| Can we descend to Khare on summit day? | It may be possible for a strong, acclimatized team in good conditions; it must not be published as a guarantee. |
| Is technical equipment mandatory from Khare? | Mountaineering boots, crampons, harness, helmet, ice axe, glacier-rope systems and possibly an ascender; confirm the leader’s exact list. |
| What happens if weather closes the Mera route? | Use the weather day if healthy and practical, or descend to Khare/lower camp. Do not force a closed route. |

Useful answers

## Frequently asked questions

Can I climb Mera Peak directly from Khare?+
Yes, if you are already acclimatized to Khare and the guide confirms the route and camp plan.
How many days are required from Khare?+
Use four climbing-only days as a sample, plus a weather or recovery day where possible.
Does the Mera short program use High Camp?+
It is often the more conservative operational choice, but the leader decides based on route, health, weather and supplies.
Can we descend to Khare on summit day?+
It can be possible for a strong, acclimatized team, but a lower-camp overnight must remain available.
How acclimatized should I be?+
You should have recently slept and walked at comparable altitude without worsening symptoms; the guide should assess this on arrival.
What climbing equipment is required from Khare?+
Boots, crampons, harness, helmet, ice axe, rope-team equipment and possibly an ascender; confirm the operator’s list.
What if I have a headache in Khare?+
Report it and stop the upward plan until assessed. Worsening symptoms require descent, not a forced skills day.
Is a summit guaranteed?+
No. The route is conditional on health, weather, glacier condition and turnaround time.
What does the package include?+
The written quote should name the guide, meals, equipment, permit, insurance and camps; anything else is not assumed.
What happens if weather closes Mera?+
Wait within the protected plan if practical, or descend to Khare/lower camp. Do not force the glacier.
