# Staying Overnight at Everest Base Camp: Regulations for Trekkers and Expeditions

Ordinary trekking visitors normally walk from Gorak Shep to Everest Base Camp, visit the established trekking area and return to Gorak Shep to sleep. Expedition camps are not public accommodation and require separate expedition authorization and logistics.

## Why Gorak Shep is the standard overnight

- It has established teahouses, meals and basic toilets.

- It keeps visitors away from active expedition and glacier operations.

- The Base Camp surface and access line change with the glacier and season.

- Even Gorak Shep is above 5,000 metres, so additional exposure should not be added casually.

## What to expect on the day visit

The walk crosses rough moraine and commonly takes several hours return from Gorak Shep. Carry water, food, insulation, sun protection and any medication in the daypack. There is no public lodge, shop or dependable public toilet at Base Camp.

Is there a hotel at Everest Base Camp?+
No. The normal public teahouses are at Gorak Shep; Base Camp is a seasonal expedition area.
Can I book one night in an expedition tent?+
Not as an ordinary trek accommodation. Expedition participation and camping require separate authorization, logistics and current official verification.
Can I visit Base Camp and Kala Patthar on the same day?+
Combining both can be overly demanding above 5,000 metres. Standard plans usually separate the Base Camp day and optional Kala Patthar morning.
