## What a fair quotation includes

- Daily wage plus staff meals and accommodation throughout the assignment.

- Domestic travel or flights needed to join and leave the trek.

- Appropriate insurance, clothing and equipment for the route and season.

- A clear maximum carrying load and porter-to-guest ratio.

- Government charges, agency service and contingency arrangements where applicable.

## Hiring responsibly

Ask for the operator’s registration details, emergency procedure and staff welfare policy. Extremely low prices can hide missing insurance, inadequate equipment or pressure to carry unreasonable loads.

Pack within the stated duffel allowance and do not add weight after the load is checked. As a useful field benchmark, a responsible arrangement may assign one porter to two trekkers with about 25 kg of shared client luggage, while ethical load guidance commonly sits around 20–25 kg; Verify whether that figure includes the worker’s own equipment.

A municipal visitor survey reported roughly NPR 49,000–50,000 in median guide/porter expenditure, but that is not a wage tariff and may combine services and trip lengths. Ask what the quoted amount actually pays for.

Staff should be able to refuse unsafe conditions and receive the same respect, shelter and emergency support expected for guests. Tips have no mandatory official rate, so agree a transparent group budget and ask how it will be divided.
