# Everest Base Camp Rescue Helicopter Guide: Insurance, Weather and Decisions

A helicopter evacuation can be lifesaving, but it is weather-dependent, capacity-limited and not a guaranteed taxi from the trail. A responsible plan combines early reporting, descent when possible, insurance confirmation and local coordination.

## Stop, descend and seek help when symptoms worsen

Online guidance cannot diagnose illness. Tell your guide early and seek professional medical advice whenever symptoms are concerning.

**1 · Monitor**Mild headache or appetite change: rest, hydrate and report it.

**2 · Do not ascend**Persistent headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue means no higher sleeping altitude.

**3 · Descend / evacuate**Confusion, loss of coordination, breathlessness at rest or a cough with frothy sputum are emergencies.

- **Stop**Pause the ascent and assess with your guide.

- **Descend**Go lower if symptoms do not settle or are severe.

- **Evacuate**Use medical care, rescue coordination and insurance support when needed.

## What this means

Before departure, check that the policy covers trekking at the maximum elevation, helicopter evacuation, medical treatment, repatriation and any authorization process. Recent reporting about alleged fraudulent rescue practices makes clear documentation and independent judgment especially important; it does not mean every evacuation is improper.

## What to do on the trail

- Carry insurer emergency numbers and policy details offline

- Ask who contacts the insurer and who authorizes a flight

- Request an itemized invoice, flight manifest, medical notes and receipts; keep copies

- Ask why a flight is medically safer than descent or ground support

- Distinguish a medically necessary evacuation from a planned commercial helicopter return

- Weather, visibility, landing-site safety, aircraft limits and priority cases can delay operations

Do not delay urgent descent while trying to complete paperwork. At the same time, do not accept pressure for an unnecessary flight, an unexplained diagnosis or a blank claim form.

## Build it into the itinerary

Share the plan with every trek member before departure. Agree who makes the decision to stop or descend, where the nearest help is expected and how the operator and insurer will be contacted.

## What the aircraft cannot promise

At Gorak Shep-class elevations, payload limits can restrict a lift to two or three passengers and may require a lower shuttle point. Weather, visibility and helipad condition can stop a safe landing even after a flight has been requested. Begin descent while the person is still ambulatory and conditions allow it; treat the aircraft as a coordinated option, not the first or only response.
