Everest Base Camp Trek from India: Cost in INR, Permits & Travel Guide

Indian citizens receive the published SAARC rate for Sagarmatha National Park entry, but the trek still requires careful budgeting for Nepal travel, local entry, TIMS, a licensed guide, Lukla logistics, insurance and trail expenses. Pay Nepal costs in NPR unless a supplier's written invoice states otherwise.

India to Kathmandu: choose the whole journey first

Reach Kathmandu early enough for a trek briefing, equipment check, NPR cash and the confirmed Lukla or Ramechhap departure plan. Do not schedule an international return immediately after the planned mountain flight.

Permits and current guide rule for Indian travellers

Nepal Tourism Board's published park schedule lists Sagarmatha National Park entry at NPR 1,500 for SAARC visitors. Indian trekkers should carry the identity document specified by the issuing authority and agency.

Current NTB TIMS guidance lists Everest Base Camp among routes requiring a licensed trekking guide and TIMS issued through a registered trekking agency. The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu local Trek Card or visitor entry is a separate local requirement; confirm the current process and amount before departure.

Field note

SAARC treatment does not mean every route fee, insurance term or agency service is discounted.

Build the budget in NPR, then convert to INR

Use the current bank or card conversion rate only when paying. INR and NPR are linked currencies, but acceptance, denomination limits and change availability can still create practical problems; carry usable NPR for the trail.

Insurance, gear and trip format

  • Buy a policy that explicitly covers trekking above 5,000 metres and medically necessary helicopter evacuation.
  • Check exclusions, authorization steps and whether treatment and repatriation are included.
  • Bring tested footwear and personal layers; selected sleeping bags, down jackets and trekking poles can be rented in Kathmandu after inspection.
  • A private trek costs more but allows pace and service to fit one party; a group can share guiding cost but uses fixed dates and group pacing.

Useful answers

Frequently asked questions

Do Indians receive a lower Sagarmatha National Park fee?

Yes. NTB's published schedule lists NPR 1,500 for SAARC visitors, compared with NPR 3,000 for other foreign visitors. Reconfirm before payment.

Can Indian rupees be used throughout the trek?

Do not rely on it. Arrange Nepalese rupees for trail spending and follow current rules on accepted INR denominations.

Do Indian trekkers need a licensed guide and TIMS?

Current NTB TIMS guidance lists Everest Base Camp under the licensed-guide and agency-issued TIMS provision. Confirm the document process with a registered Nepal trekking agency.
