Month-by-month planning

Everest Base Camp Trek in November: Complete Guide

The Everest Base Camp trek is normally possible in November, but it falls in late autumn, beginning with busy clear-weather trekking and ending colder, quieter and closer to winter. Its main advantage is clearer-air potential with reducing crowds later in the month; the primary difficulty is increasing overnight cold and shortening daylight. It may suit travelers who understand these trade-offs and can keep the itinerary flexible.

Altitude safety depends on the pace, sleeping-altitude profile and honest symptom reporting; fitness alone does not prevent altitude illness.

Safety decision aid

Stop, descend and seek help when symptoms worsen

Online guidance cannot diagnose illness. Tell your guide early and seek professional medical advice whenever symptoms are concerning.

1 · MonitorMild headache or appetite change: rest, hydrate and report it.
2 · Do not ascendPersistent headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue means no higher sleeping altitude.
3 · Descend / evacuateConfusion, loss of coordination, breathlessness at rest or a cough with frothy sputum are emergencies.
  1. StopPause the ascent and assess with your guide.
  2. DescendGo lower if symptoms do not settle or are severe.
  3. EvacuateUse medical care, rescue coordination and insurance support when needed.

Weather and temperature in November

Early November often retains autumn comfort in sun. By late month, shade and nights at Dingboche, Lobuche and Gorak Shep become distinctly wintry.

Lower gateways are cool and dry; Namche sees crisp mornings; Tengboche forests lose warmth early; Dingboche upward experiences freezing nights and possible snow.

Historical climate patterns do not predict a specific departure. Temperature changes sharply with elevation, sun, shade, wind and time of day. Wind chill can make exposed areas feel much colder.

This guide does not publish a manufactured village-by-village temperature table. Check a current mountain forecast close to departure and interpret any online value by its measurement location, elevation, period and whether it is observed or modelled.

Rain, snow and trail conditions

Dust may persist, while shaded ice becomes more likely as water refreezes. Poles help; traction should follow current upper-route advice.

River and bridge conditions, local erosion, new snow and maintenance can change the walking line. The guide and lodge network should reassess the next stage each day; no page can promise every section is open.

  • Use trekking poles where footing is loose, wet or icy.
  • Keep waterproof and insulating layers in the daypack.
  • Carry traction only when current upper-trail conditions justify it.
  • Allow route adjustments instead of forcing a fixed arrival time.

Mountain visibility and photography

Frequently clear in stable late-autumn weather, with occasional winter systems bringing cloud or snow

Clear air and lower-angle light can be excellent. Later snow is possible, and batteries need more deliberate warmth management.

Everest is never guaranteed to be visible. Drones are restricted in protected areas and Nepal aviation rules apply; do not fly one without all required permissions.

  • Favor early clear windows when the monthly pattern supports them.
  • Carry spare batteries close to the body in cold weather.
  • Use waterproof camera storage in rain or snow.
  • Ask before photographing people, homes or ceremonies.

Crowds and the trail experience

Early November remains busy, but traffic often reduces noticeably after mid-month. Kala Patthar and Base Camp become less congested while lodge choice slowly narrows.

Crowd descriptions compare this month editorially with the main spring and autumn seasons. They are not visitor counts and should not be read as a promise of an empty or busy trail on a particular day.

Lukla flights and ground transport

Often workable in clear spells, but morning frost, wind and local cloud still interrupt operations

Mountain flights operate only when the airline and aviation authorities consider conditions suitable. Delays can happen in every month. Kathmandu or Ramechhap arrangements, baggage limits and check-in times must be confirmed with the operating airline.

Checked on August 4, 2026. Do not schedule an international departure immediately after the planned return from Lukla.

Field note

What our operations team checks: airport in use, airline notice, road departure time when Ramechhap is involved, baggage terms, passenger backlog and the fallback if a flight does not operate.

Accommodation, food and water

Broad early-month service; some lodges begin reducing operations toward winter

Individual lodges may change rooms, menus, heating, hot showers, charging or connectivity according to staffing, demand and weather. Dining-room heating is limited at high altitude, and bedrooms are generally unheated.

Treat or purchase safe water rather than relying on untreated sources. Choose freshly cooked food, carry cash for incidental services and confirm high-village rooms through the trek team.

Month-specific itinerary advice

Use early starts because daylight shortens, retain both acclimatization days and confirm upper lodges for late departures.

A properly acclimatized itinerary remains the starting point. Favor health and conditions over a promised schedule; the key decision points are Namche, Dingboche, Lobuche and Gorak Shep.

  • Keep acclimatization nights in Namche and Dingboche.
  • Report headache, nausea, unusual fatigue or coordination problems early.
  • Descend when medically indicated.
  • Treat helicopter support as weather- and authorization-dependent, not a guaranteed shortcut.

Altitude, health and insurance

Altitude risk exists in every month. Fitness, medication or favorable weather does not prevent altitude illness. Ascend gradually, hydrate normally, avoid pressure to continue and use emergency communication early.

This guide provides general trek-planning information, not medical diagnosis or treatment. Altitude illness can affect any traveler regardless of fitness. Discuss personal risks with an appropriate clinician, report symptoms promptly, and descend when medically indicated.

Insurance should explicitly cover trekking to the planned altitude and emergency evacuation. Helicopters may be unable to fly in poor conditions and insurers may require authorization.

Packing for November

Start with the complete EBC packing list, then add or strengthen the month-specific items below. Test boots, pack fit and layering before Nepal.

  • Warmer sleeping bag for late departures
  • Down jacket and insulated trousers for evenings
  • Two glove layers
  • Insulated water bottle
  • Poles for shaded ice
  • Sun and dust protection

Advantages of trekking in November

  • Clear-air potential
  • Crowds reduce through the month
  • Dry lower trail
  • Strong late-autumn photography

Disadvantages and risks

  • Rapidly colder nights
  • Short days
  • Possible early snow or ice
  • Some services reduce late

Who should consider this month?

October is warmer and busier; early December is quieter but more firmly winter.

  • First-time trekkers early in the month
  • Cold-ready travelers seeking fewer people later
  • Photographers
  • Flexible small groups

Cost considerations and responsible trekking

Early November retains peak demand; later dates may offer more flexibility but require stronger gear and contingency planning.

There is no reliable fixed monthly price. Compare currency, validity, inclusions, excluded meals and drinks, staff support, contingency arrangements and insurance before booking.

The route enters Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage property. Use treated or refillable water, reduce single-use plastic, carry waste responsibly, respect Sherpa communities and monastery rules, avoid disturbing wildlife and support local lodges and staff.

Field note

Amigo field note: budget contingency money separately from the core package. Weather delays, road alternatives and unplanned hotel nights are operational costs, not proof that a particular month is cheap or expensive.

Balanced recommendation

Choose November for clearer-air potential with reducing crowds later in the month if you are prepared for increasing overnight cold and shortening daylight. Treat late November as an autumn–winter crossover and upgrade sleeping, hand and bottle insulation accordingly.

October is warmer and busier; early December is quieter but more firmly winter.

Flexibility remains more important than a seasonal label: current conditions, acclimatization and the ability to change plans should decide the final route.
