## Stop, descend and seek help when symptoms worsen

**1 · Monitor**Mild headache or appetite change: rest, hydrate and report it.

**2 · Do not ascend**Persistent headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue means no higher sleeping altitude.

**3 · Descend / evacuate**Confusion, loss of coordination, breathlessness at rest or a cough with frothy sputum are emergencies.

- **Descend**Go lower if symptoms do not settle or are severe.

- Insurance Validation: Travel insurance must explicitly cover high-altitude trekking up to 5,500 m (Kala Patthar elevation: 5,545 m).

- Evacuation Clearance: The lead guide and attending medical clinician authorize emergency helicopter evacuation in coordination with insurance desks.

- Confirm whether the insurer handles direct billing with helicopter rescue operators or requires upfront payment.

- Flight Interruption Cover: Travel insurance should include trip delay coverage for mountain weather closures at Lukla or Ramechhap.

- Insurance policies strictly exclude undeclared pre-existing conditions and altitude incidents involving alcohol.

## Documents to carry

Keep the policy certificate, emergency phone number, policy number and insurer instructions offline on your phone and on paper. Give a copy to your operator and an emergency contact at home.

Insurance does not guarantee that a helicopter can fly. Weather, visibility, aircraft availability and medical decisions still control the response, and descent on foot may begin first.

Recent reporting about alleged fraudulent helicopter-rescue practices is a reminder to keep a clear paper trail. It is not evidence that every evacuation is improper, and an urgent medical decision should never be delayed for administration.

- When safe, call the insurer assistance line and Verify whether prior authorization is required; follow the guide or clinician if waiting would put someone at risk.

- Ask for the clinical reason for evacuation, who is arranging the flight and whether descent or ground support is unsafe.

- Keep copies of the itemized invoice, flight manifest, hospital or clinic notes, receipts and names of the operator and treating team.

- A medically necessary evacuation is different from a paid helicopter return for convenience; planned returns are commonly excluded.

- If the explanation feels pressured or unclear, request an independent medical assessment where practical and contact the insurer directly.
