Conditions at Lukla, Namche and Gorak Shep can differ sharply on the same day. Use this table for seasonal planning, not as a substitute for a current forecast.
How altitude changes the weather
Temperature normally falls as the trail climbs, but wind, cloud and sun exposure can make the felt temperature change quickly. A mild afternoon in Namche does not predict the overnight cold at Lobuche or Gorak Shep.
High-altitude solar radiation is strong even in cold air. Trekkers need sunglasses, sunscreen and covered skin alongside insulated layers. Water bottles and hydration tubes can freeze on cold mornings.
Choose a month by your priorities
- Choose October or early November for a strong chance of clear mountain views, accepting higher demand.
- Choose March or April for spring warmth, rhododendrons lower on the route and an active trekking atmosphere.
- Choose late November or winter for quieter trails only if you are equipped for severe cold and possible snow.
- Choose monsoon months only with generous flight buffers, waterproof equipment and realistic expectations about visibility.
