Why choose Gokyo
Gokyo offers turquoise lakes, Ngozumpa Glacier and a different view of Cho Oyu and Everest-region peaks. The experience is more about valley scenery and a high viewpoint than the Base Camp marker.
- Quieter valley feel than the classic EBC corridor
- Gokyo Ri sunrise viewpoint
- Possible connection over Cho La when conditions allow
Route and acclimatization
Build the itinerary around Namche and an appropriate higher acclimatization stop. The Cho La connection is a serious high-pass option, not a casual shortcut, and may require a guide, traction and weather margin.
Pass and trail conditions change. Confirm locally before committing to a high route.
Who it suits
Choose Gokyo for lakes, viewpoints and a less direct route. Choose classic EBC for the iconic Base Camp objective and more established first-time flow.

Frequently asked questions
Is Gokyo easier than EBC?
Not automatically. It can be quieter, but altitude, steep terrain and optional high passes still make it strenuous.
Can I combine Gokyo and EBC?
Yes, a longer circuit can combine them, often via Cho La, but it needs additional acclimatization and contingency time.
