# Kala Patthar: Complete Everest Trail Guide

Kala Patthar sits at about 5,545 m. Rocky viewpoint above Gorak Shep. About 3.5 km round trip with steep ascent, with 3–4 hr return from Gorak Shep. Conditions and timings vary with weather, pace and acclimatization.

## Why the viewpoint is worth the effort

Kala Patthar provides the close Everest, Nuptse, Pumori and Khumbu Glacier panorama that many trekkers expect but do not get directly from Base Camp. The climb begins above 5,000 m, so the visual reward never removes the need for a conservative decision.

- Start before dawn only with suitable health, weather and lighting.

- Carry water, insulation, headlamp and sun protection; there are no facilities on the viewpoint.

- Turn around if symptoms, ice or visibility make the climb unsafe.

## How it fits the itinerary

On the standard plan, Base Camp is visited on Day 9 and Kala Patthar is optional on Day 10 before descending toward Pheriche. It is a viewpoint excursion, not an overnight destination, and the sequence should change when health or weather requires it.

- Do not climb solely because the group has paid for the trek.

- Keep enough daylight and energy for the descent.

- Use a lower or rest-day alternative when the body is not recovering.

## Photography and conduct

The upper slope is exposed, cold and busy at popular times. Keep to the route, avoid blocking other trekkers. Obtain permission before photographing people and let the guide manage spacing on loose ground.
