Airport day: protect the first hours
Lukla is not simply a trailhead; it is an operating airport where visibility, wind, aircraft rotation, baggage weight and runway conditions shape the day's plan. Keep documents, medication, warm layers and essentials with you until the duffel is confirmed.
The airport may be reached from Kathmandu or, during operating periods, from Manthali/Ramechhap after an early road transfer. Confirm the departure airport and baggage allowance with the airline or operator shortly before travel.
- Do not book an international connection immediately after the planned Lukla return.
- Expect queues and flight backlogs after weather interruptions.
- Keep a warm layer and rain protection accessible while waiting.
First and last trekking stages
| Moment | Practical plan |
|---|---|
| Arrival | Lukla to Phakding is usually a 3–4 hour settling-in walk if the flight arrives on time |
| Return | Namche to Lukla is a full descent day with a final uphill approach to the airport town |
| Contingency | Keep at least one protected Kathmandu day after the planned Lukla return |
| Lodges | Rooms may fill quickly when delayed flights release several groups together |
Services before the trail
Lukla has lodges, bakeries, gear shops, pharmacies, ATMs and mobile service, but availability is not guaranteed at every hour. Use the town to check missing small items, confirm the porter load and clarify the next day's start rather than trying to repair a major packing gap.
