Current Lukla Flight Planning Update
Last checked: August 7, 2026. There is no permanent year-round promise that every EBC passenger will depart from Kathmandu or from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap. Airlines and operators may change the operating airport around traffic, airport slots, season and operational notices.
Use the airport, reporting time and sector printed on the latest ticket or written operator confirmation. A general website statement does not override the issued booking.

Kathmandu versus Ramechhap
The operating airport depends on airline planning, traffic management and season. Direct Kathmandu–Lukla flights are convenient, while Ramechhap–Lukla operations require a road journey from Kathmandu, often beginning very early or the previous day.
Your final flight airport and reporting time should be reconfirmed shortly before departure. Do not build a fixed plan around an old season’s schedule.
Why flights are delayed
- Cloud, wind and visibility can change quickly in mountain valleys.
- Lukla uses visual flight operations, so acceptable conditions are required at both ends of the route.
- Aircraft rotations mean one disruption can affect later departures.
- Safety and operational decisions belong to the airline and aviation authorities, not trekking staff.
Baggage and check-in
Small aircraft have strict weight and balance limits. The combined checked and hand-baggage allowance is much lower than on an international flight and can vary by airline, so use the allowance shown on your current ticket.
Wear your boots and keep medication, documents, electronics and a warm layer in hand baggage. Extra weight may be charged and is not always accepted on the same flight.
A sensible disruption plan
- Place a spare day in Kathmandu after the trek.
- Keep your international departure at least a day—and preferably more—after the expected Lukla return.
- Understand which delay expenses are included by your operator and insurer.
- Treat helicopter transfers as costly, weather-dependent alternatives rather than guaranteed backups.

How long is the flight to Lukla?
The airborne time is usually around 25–35 minutes, depending on the departure airport, routing and conditions. Ground delays can be much longer.
Can I fly to Lukla in the afternoon?
Morning operations are preferred because mountain weather is often more stable. Afternoon flights are less dependable and should not be assumed.
What happens if my flight is cancelled?
Airlines normally move passengers according to availability and operating decisions. Your guide or operator should coordinate revised lodging, transport and itinerary options.
