# Lukla Flight Guide: Delays, Ramechhap and Baggage

Flights to Lukla are weather-dependent and often operate early in the morning. In busy trekking periods, airlines may use Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu, adding a long road transfer. Keep at least one contingency day and avoid a tight international connection after the trek.

## Current Lukla Flight Planning Update

Last checked: August 7, 2026. There is no permanent year-round promise that every EBC passenger will depart from Kathmandu or from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap. Airlines and operators may change the operating airport around traffic, airport slots, season and operational notices.

Use the airport, reporting time and sector printed on the latest ticket or written operator confirmation. A general website statement does not override the issued booking.

## Kathmandu versus Ramechhap

The operating airport depends on airline planning, traffic management and season. Direct Kathmandu–Lukla flights are convenient, while Ramechhap–Lukla operations require a road journey from Kathmandu, often beginning very early or the previous day.

Your final flight airport and reporting time should be reconfirmed shortly before departure. Do not build a fixed plan around an old season’s schedule.

## Why flights are delayed

- Cloud, wind and visibility can change quickly in mountain valleys.

- Lukla uses visual flight operations, so acceptable conditions are required at both ends of the route.

- Aircraft rotations mean one disruption can affect later departures.

- Safety and operational decisions belong to the airline and aviation authorities, not trekking staff.

## Baggage and check-in

Small aircraft have strict weight and balance limits. The combined checked and hand-baggage allowance is much lower than on an international flight and can vary by airline, so use the allowance shown on your current ticket.

Wear your boots and keep medication, documents, electronics and a warm layer in hand baggage. Extra weight may be charged and is not always accepted on the same flight.

## A sensible disruption plan

- Place a spare day in Kathmandu after the trek.

- Keep your international departure at least a day—and preferably more—after the expected Lukla return.

- Understand which delay expenses are included by your operator and insurer.

- Treat helicopter transfers as costly, weather-dependent alternatives rather than guaranteed backups.

## Reconfirm the airport and baggage terms

The operating airport, reporting time and baggage allowance can change with season, airline planning and traffic management. Use the current ticket and direct operator or airline confirmation, not an old itinerary or generic article.

- Verify whether the flight departs Kathmandu or Ramechhap.

- Keep medication, documents, electronics and a warm layer in hand baggage.

- Confirm what happens to excess baggage if the aircraft is weight-limited.

## Build the return around uncertainty

- Keep at least one protected day after the planned Lukla return before an international flight.

- Ask who pays for hotel, meals, road transfer or a rebooked flight after disruption.

- Treat a helicopter as a separate, weather-dependent commercial or medical service.

- Keep cash and policy contacts offline while waiting for a new departure.

## What to do after a cancellation

- First confirm whether the airline has moved you to the next operating flight or whether you must revalidate the ticket through the operator.

- If the delay lasts more than one day, ask for the revised trek start, lodge nights, guide days and baggage plan in writing.

- Do not spend every spare day trying to preserve the original summit schedule; shorten or reschedule the trek if acclimatization or the return margin disappears.

- If a Ramechhap departure is involved, confirm the road transfer and reporting time for the replacement flight rather than assuming the original airport still applies.

- Keep a record of cancellation notices and receipts for any insurance claim, without assuming reimbursement is automatic.
