# Everest Base Camp Trek by Road: Salleri–Surke Route Without Lukla Flight

The overland EBC approach uses a long jeep journey from Kathmandu through Salleri toward the current drivable endpoint, often discussed as Thamdanda or the Surke area, then joins the Lukla–Phakding corridor on foot. The usable road end changes with construction, rain, landslides and vehicle type, so it must be confirmed for the departure date.

## Current road-end status: verify, do not assume

Road construction has pushed vehicle access beyond the traditional Salleri trailhead, but a map line does not prove that a tourist jeep can reach the same point today. Operators may describe Phaplu, Salleri, Kharikhola, Thamdanda or Surke-area access depending on the vehicle, road work and recent weather.

Before departure, confirm with the transport provider and trek operator the same-day endpoint, expected hours, vehicle type, road condition and first overnight. Treat that dated confirmation—not an old itinerary—as the current road status.

## Kathmandu to Salleri to Surke-area logistics

Some itineraries split the road journey overnight; others attempt a very long same-day drive. A split journey is usually easier to manage and less vulnerable to arriving after dark.

## Road quality and monsoon limitations

- Expect paved, broken paved and unsealed sections rather than one uniform highway.

- Dust can dominate dry periods; mud, washouts and landslides can slow or stop monsoon travel.

- A private four-wheel-drive vehicle offers more control but cannot make a closed or unsafe road passable.

- Keep at least one road contingency day and avoid promising a fixed arrival hour.

## Acclimatization and itinerary implications

The road approach may add gradual exposure and walking before Namche, but it does not replace the Namche and Dingboche acclimatization nights. The lower route also contains repeated climbs and descents, so it is not automatically easier than flying to Lukla.

- Keep Namche and Dingboche as two-night bases.

- Show every sleeping altitude in the written itinerary.

- Coordinate the guide and porter meeting point before leaving Kathmandu.

- Confirm where TIMS, park and Khumbu local entry are processed on the selected approach.

- Named drivable endpoint and first-night lodge

- Jeep type, seats, baggage and driver contact

- Expected departure time and daylight margin

- Recent landslide, rain and construction reports
