# Everest Base Camp for Senior Trekkers: Medical Review, Pace and Exit Plans

Age alone does not decide suitability for EBC. Health history, medication, endurance, recovery, balance and response to altitude deserve a clinician review and a conservative itinerary with clear stop and descent decisions.

**16–17 days**Paced itinerary

**4 hrs/day**Target walking pace

**Double poles**Knee protection

**Heli option**Easy descent

## Start with the full route

Take the planned sleeping altitudes, walking days, flight sectors and emergency options to a clinician who knows the traveller's history. A general fitness certificate is not the same as a route-specific discussion of altitude and exertion.

## Build the right capacity

- Walk on hills or stairs and practise controlled descents.

- Use back-to-back walks to test recovery, not only one long outing.

- Train with the footwear and light daypack used on the trek.

- Practise balance, poles, layering and pacing before departure.

## Design a forgiving itinerary

Swipe to view table →

| Planning choice | Why it helps |
| --- | --- |
| Extra acclimatization time | Allows health and sleep to be assessed before higher stages |
| Small or private group | Makes a slower pace and route change more practical |
| Spare days | Protects against flights, weather and recovery needs |
| Written exit plan | Reduces pressure when descent or evacuation is safer |

## Medication and daily checks

Keep personal medicines in the daypack, review interactions and arrange refills before departure. Agree how the guide will check headache, appetite, sleep, balance and breathing without turning the check into a performance test.

## Turnaround signs

- New confusion, poor coordination or unusual drowsiness

- Breathlessness at rest, chest symptoms or a wet cough

- Repeated vomiting, inability to eat or drink, or rapidly worsening weakness

- Any change that makes safe walking or communication unreliable

**Field advice**

Stop ascending and seek professional help. Do not let age, pride or a fixed booking override a safety decision.

## Helicopter and insurance reality

A helicopter return or evacuation is weather-dependent and subject to aircraft, landing, medical-necessity and policy limits. Confirm trekking elevation, evacuation, treatment and authorization terms before travel, and keep a lower-route plan in case flying is not possible.

Useful answers

## Frequently asked questions

Is there a maximum age for EBC?+
There is no official government age limit for Everest Base Camp. Trekkers in their 60s, 70s, and 80s complete the trek successfully by adding 2–3 acclimatization days, maintaining a steady pace, and consulting a physician prior to departure.
How much extra time should seniors allow?+
We recommend adding 2 to 3 extra days to the standard 14-day itinerary (making a 16-to-17-day trek). This allows shorter daily walking stages (4 to 5 hours max), an extra rest night in Dingboche or Pangboche, and built-in buffer for Lukla flights.
Should seniors choose a private trek?+
A private or small-group plan can make flexible pacing and route changes easier, but the operator's qualifications and emergency process still matter.
Should seniors choose a helicopter return?+
A helicopter return from Gorak Shep or Pheriche to Kathmandu is a popular option for seniors to save 3–4 days of downhill knee stress while avoiding Lukla flight delays.
What symptoms require stopping?+
Confusion, poor coordination, breathlessness at rest, chest symptoms, repeated vomiting or rapidly worsening illness require urgent professional help and may require descent.

## Sources & methodology

Changing prices, fees, aviation arrangements, local procedures, weather and lodge availability should be reconfirmed before travel. Altitudes, distances and walking times are approximate planning values.
