Mad Honey in Nepal is a rare, psychoactive wild honey produced by the Himalayan giant honey bee (Apis laboriosa) feeding on the nectar of wild rhododendron blossoms in spring. Revered for centuries in traditional Himalayan medicine for pain relief and circulation, its psychoactive and medicinal properties stem from naturally occurring grayanotoxins. When consumed in controlled micro-doses, it produces warmth and relaxation, but overdose causes severe hypotension.

## The Botany of Mad Honey

Nepal is home to over 30 species of Rhododendron. During spring flowering (March to May) in subalpine zones between 2,500 m and 3,500 m, species such as Rhododendron arboreum, R. campanulatum, and R. anthopogon produce nectar rich in grayanotoxins (specifically Grayanotoxin I and III).

When the giant Himalayan honey bee (Apis laboriosa) forages on these blossoms, the neurotoxins are concentrated in the honey comb. The bees are physiologically immune to the toxin, but mammals that consume the honey experience distinct physiological and neurological effects.
