## ルート overview and progression value

Baruntse (7,129 m) in the Khumbu / Makalu region is Nepal’s premier 7,000 m progression objective. It provides the ideal bridge between 6,000 m trekking peaks (such as Mera Peak, Island Peak, or Ama Dablam) and full 8,000 m expeditions.

The standard route climbs the Southeast Ridge from Base Camp (5,400 m) via the West Col (6,135 m). The route features crevassed glacier navigation, 50° snow and ice slopes, and a dramatic corniced summit ridge.

A complete Baruntse expedition takes 32 to 36 days, commonly incorporating the trekking route through the Hinku Valley with an acclimatization ascent of Mera Peak.

## Equipment, fixed lines and summit strategy

Although Baruntse does not require supplemental oxygen under normal operations, emergency oxygen bottles and masks must be staged at Camp II. The Southeast Ridge requires approximately 1,500 m of fixed rope across the West Col headwall and summit crest.

- High-angle ice climbing gear: dual-point crampons, technical ice axes, and ascenders (jumars).

- Layering: 800-fill down suit or high-altitude two-piece down gear for temperatures dropping to -30°C.

- Turnaround time: 13:00 PM from any point on the Southeast Ridge to avoid late afternoon cloud build-up and whiteout conditions.

- Logistics: Liaison officer, NMA/Department of Tourism 許可証, Sagarmatha and Makalu-Barun national park conservation fees.

## Hinku and Hongu valley approach and the South-East Ridge route

Reaching Baruntse Base Camp is an expedition in itself. Climbers fly into Lukla and trek eastward across Zatrwa La Pass (4,610m) into the wild Hinku Valley, passing Kothe and Khare before crossing the glaciated Mera La (5,415m) into the uninhabited Hongu Valley. Base Camp is pitched beside the pristine emerald Panch Pokhari lakes at 5,400 meters.

From Base Camp, the route climbs up to the glaciated West Col (6,143m) where Camp 1 is established. Camp 2 (High Camp) is placed at 6,400m on the South-East Ridge. Summit day demands ascending sustained 45-degree hard blue ice slopes, navigating knife-edge snow arêtes with sheer drop-offs into the Barun glacier, and surmounting final steep cornices to reach the 7,129m summit.

- Hongu Valley wilderness: Untouched glacial wilderness with no permanent lodges; complete tented self-sufficiency.

- South-East Ridge line: Classic mountaineering line requiring confident crampon front-pointing and ice axe technique.

- West Col crossing (6,143m): Fixed-line climbing over a heavily glaciated high col connecting Hongu and Barun valleys.

- Everest and Makalu views: Front-row summit perspectives of the towering south faces of Lhotse and Makalu.

## Technical demands, safety protocols, and acclimatization strategy

Baruntse is substantially more demanding than trekking peaks like Mera or Island Peak. Climbers must possess prior 6,000m technical climbing experience, proficient jumaring on steep ice, and comfort moving along narrow corniced ridges where footing must be exact. Teams often climb Mera Peak (6,476m) en route as an active acclimatization training peak before tackling Baruntse.

Safety and medical planning: High winds and sudden squalls can sweep across the exposed ridge. High camps require heavy-duty four-season geodesic tents securely anchored into snow pickets and ice screws. A 1:1 Sherpa guide ratio, satellite phone communication, and emergency supplemental oxygen at Camp 2 are standard safety requirements.

- Mera Peak combo: Many expeditions climb Mera Peak first to pre-acclimatize before establishing Baruntse high camps.

- High-altitude wind exposure: South-East Ridge is exposed to westerly jet streams; precise weather forecasting is crucial.

- Camp infrastructure: Two high camps above base camp; fixed lines secured along all exposed ridge and headwall sections.

- Spring vs Autumn: Spring (April–May) offers warmer summit climbing; Autumn (October–November) offers clearer skies.
