## Shared Everest route and the dramatic Lhotse Couloir crux

Lhotse climbers share all base camp infrastructure and lower mountain logistics with Everest expeditions. Teams navigate the hazardous Khumbu Icefall to Camp 1 (6,050m), traverse the broad Western Cwm to Camp 2 (Advanced Base Camp, 6,400m), and climb the sheer blue-ice expanse of the Lhotse Face to Camp 3 (7,300m).

Above Camp 3, the routes diverge. While Everest climbers traverse left toward the South Col (7,906m) and the Yellow Band, Lhotse climbers push directly upward to Camp 4 (7,800m) situated on a narrow shelf beneath the couloir. Summit day involves ascending the famous Lhotse Couloir—a tight, 45-to-50-degree icy gulley flanked by granite walls that funnels climbers directly to the knife-edge summit crest.

- Shared logistics: Utilizes standard Everest infrastructure through the Khumbu Icefall and Western Cwm to Camp 3.

- Lhotse Couloir: Dramatic 300-meter icy chimney; requires technical cramponing and protection from loose rockfall.

- Camp 4 at 7,800m: High camp positioned directly below the couloir entrance, cutting summit day elevation gain.

- Summit topography: Tiny, exposed rock needle barely large enough for two climbers to stand at once.

## The Everest-Lhotse double summit and oxygen management

In recent years, the 'Everest-Lhotse Combo' has become the ultimate high-altitude endurance feat for elite mountaineers. After summiting Everest in the early morning, climbers descend to the South Col, rest for a few hours, traverse into the Lhotse high route, and summit Lhotse the following morning without returning to Base Camp. This requires extraordinary physical stamina, flawless logistics, and substantial supplemental oxygen supplies.

Oxygen and safety: Lhotse climbers utilize supplemental oxygen from Camp 3 upward. Rockfall within the Lhotse Couloir (especially in warm or low-snow years) is a recognized hazard; wearing an impact-certified mountaineering helmet and starting summit night well before midnight to complete the couloir before solar heating are essential safety protocols.

- Everest-Lhotse double: Climbing both peaks within 24 to 48 hours requires 6–8 oxygen cylinders and 2:1 Sherpa support.

- Rockfall precautions: Climb the couloir during freezing night hours to minimize rock and ice dislodgement.

- Supplemental oxygen: Essential for cognitive function and frostbite prevention above 7,500 meters.

- Permit costs: Lhotse government permit fee is lower than Everest (USD 1,800 spring vs USD 11,000 for Everest).
