Why trust this guide?
This article keeps the decision near the top, separates planning guidance from changing conditions and points you back to the complete internal library.
Browse the full Kailash library →The Kathmandu–Rasuwagadhi–Kyirong route remains the main planning framework, but 2027 tourist border operation must be confirmed separately from cargo movement before any non-refundable payment.
The Nepal-side sequence
Begin with passport and medical review in Kathmandu, then protect enough time for the road to Syabrubesi or Rasuwagadhi. The vehicle, baggage and immigration sequence should be named in the departure briefing rather than described only as an overland transfer.
Three separate border questions
- Can foreign tourists use Rasuwagadhi–Kyirong on the exact date?
- What are the operating hours and vehicle-change arrangements?
- What Nepal-side hotel and refund plan applies if crossing is delayed?
The altitude problem after Kyirong
Kyirong is about 2,800 m and Saga about 4,640 m. One acclimatisation night in Kyirong does not make the roughly 1,840 m sleeping gain suitable for everyone. Ask whether the 14–16-day plan inserts permitted intermediate sleeping stops, not merely extra Kathmandu sightseeing.
Return buffer in Nepal
Keep a protected Kathmandu night before an international flight. Border queues, road repairs and landslides can turn the return into a late arrival or an additional Nepal-side overnight.
Useful answers
Frequently asked questions
Does an open Nepal road confirm Tibet entry?
No. Road access, immigration for foreign tourists and Tibet permits are separate checks.
Should I travel directly from Kathmandu to the border?
Only when the current road plan, border timing and contingency allow it. A Nepal-side night can reduce timing pressure.
Where should extra acclimatisation be added?
Ask for the exact sleeping-altitude table. Extra days should reduce the climb after Kyirong rather than sit only in Kathmandu.
