Your tour guide must submit your request and passport details at the official Darchen horse management desk the afternoon prior to starting the Parikrama. Rates are fixed by local authorities to prevent price gouging. A pony booking includes the horse and a dedicated local Tibetan horseman who leads the animal by rein throughout the 3-day journey (pilgrims are never allowed to ride unguided). Payment must be made in cash Chinese Yuan (RMB) directly to the desk. Once allocated, your assigned pony and handler remain with you for all 3 days. - All pony and porter bookings are formalized through the official nomad committee office in Darchen. - Rates are strictly non-negotiable and fixed by local authorities (payable in cash Chinese Yuan RMB). - Every pony is led by an experienced local Tibetan horseman who manages the animal at all times. - Porters carry one personal daypack (up to 5–7 kg); heavy luggage remains locked in your Darchen hotel. ## Riding safety rules: The mandatory Dolma La walking section While riding a pony provides immense relief on the long, gradual approach to Dirapuk, pilgrims must understand the strict safety limitations. A pony is NOT an all-terrain taxi that carries you continuously. On Day 2, ponies carry riders up to the top of Dolma La Pass (5,630m). However, from the crest of Dolma La down to the valley floor past Gauri Kund (a steep 3 km drop over treacherous, loose boulders and snow patches), horsemen will strictly forbid pilgrims from sitting on the horse. Riding down this steep gradient carries an extreme risk of the horse slipping and pitching the rider down the rocky abyss.
