Start with official permission
CAAN says foreign nationals intending to operate a drone in Nepal should obtain Temporary Drone Registration through its Flight Safety Standards Department. The process includes an in-person visit and drone inspection, passport and valid Nepal visa, a signed commitment covering purpose, location and duration, and supporting documents; CAAN also lists a valid CE mark requirement.
Registration is not the same as permission to fly anywhere. Confirm written flight authorization and any additional Langtang National Park/DNPWC, local authority or Department of Tourism approvals for your planned coordinates before packing the aircraft.
Use CAAN's current requirements and portal as the starting point. A small or sub-250 g drone should not be assumed exempt from protected-area, aviation or privacy rules.
Airstrips, helicopters and people
- Do not launch or hover near Syabrubesi, Syangboche or Phaplu airstrips, approach paths or aircraft movement areas without specific written authorization and operational coordination.
- Never fly near helicopters, rescue aircraft, expedition lifts or a temporary landing site. A drone can become an aviation hazard even when the operator sees no aircraft at launch.
- Keep the aircraft away from crowds, lodges, monasteries, homes, prayer ceremonies and private camps; obtain consent before filming identifiable people.
- Follow a guide's or official's no-fly instruction immediately, even if an app shows open airspace.
Personal photography and commercial filming are different
Some 2026 reporting described a Department of Tourism photography or filming notice for Langtang Valley and above. Treat that as a report requiring current Department of Tourism or field-office verification, not as a permanent rule stated by this guide.

Cold, altitude and battery planning
