# Langtang Valley Food Guide: Meals, Dietary Needs and Appetite

Langtang teahouses serve local staples and familiar trekking dishes, but menus narrow and prices rise as supplies travel higher. Eat food you tolerate, choose fresh cooked meals, tell the kitchen about dietary needs early and carry familiar snacks for days when altitude reduces appetite.

## What to expect

Teahouse food is designed for trekkers and ranges from local staples to familiar dishes. Appetite can decline at altitude, so choose foods you tolerate, eat regularly and communicate dietary needs early.

## Practical checklist

- Ask how dietary requirements can be handled before the trek

- Carry familiar snacks for low-appetite days

- Choose fresh, well-cooked food and safe drinking water

- Do not use alcohol to relax or sleep at altitude

**Field advice**

Trail services change with altitude, season, supply, weather and lodge operations. Use this as a planning guide, not a guaranteed service list.

## Questions worth asking

- Vegetarian Options: Fresh vegetarian meals (dal bhat, fried rice, noodle soups, potatoes) are widely available across all lodges.

- Altitude Nutrition: Consume warm garlic soup, ginger tea, porridge, and light carbohydrates when high altitude suppresses appetite.

- Dal bhat is the staple trekking meal, prepared fresh daily with locally grown grains and seasonal vegetables.

- The government yak cheese factory in Kyanjin Gompa produces fresh artisanal yak cheese available for purchase from spring to autumn.

## What you can usually eat

Dal bhat, soups, porridge, noodles, rice, potatoes, eggs and cooked vegetables appear often, with availability changing by lodge and season. Dal bhat is popular because it is filling and familiar to kitchens along the route, but choose other food when it suits your appetite or dietary needs better.

Tell the operator and lodge clearly if you are vegetarian, vegan, allergic or avoiding a specific ingredient. At higher villages, ask what the kitchen can prepare reliably rather than assuming a broad menu from a lower stop continues upward.

- Carry snacks you already know you can eat.

- Choose hot, freshly cooked food when hygiene is uncertain.

- Drink treated, boiled or sealed water.

## Eat for the altitude you are in

Appetite can fall at altitude. Use smaller familiar meals, eat regularly and drink normally rather than forcing a large plate. Avoid alcohol while acclimatizing and report persistent vomiting, severe weakness or worsening symptoms to the guide or a clinician.

Kyanjin and upper villages may have local cheese and other seasonal foods, but supply and freshness vary. Ask before buying dairy or meat that has been stored without reliable refrigeration.

- Order dinner early when the lodge is busy.

- Carry a small energy reserve for a slow stage.

- Treat persistent stomach or altitude symptoms as a health issue.

## Make the safety decision early

Before you book or set out for food guide, keep these details visible in the plan: Availability: Variable; Best source: Ask locally; Preparation: Carry backup; Before travel: Current

Agree on the point at which the plan changes. In the Food guide, a lower route, a rest day, a different transfer or an early return is a normal planning option when symptoms, weather or conditions change.

- Ask what the guide or operator will do if the main plan cannot continue.

- Keep medication, documents, communication and warm layers accessible.

- Check the current source and insurance wording before relying on a safety claim.

## What changes the plan

For food guide, agree the change point before departure. In the Food guide, a lower route, rest day, different transfer or early return is a normal option when symptoms, weather or access change. The operator should explain who makes that decision and how the group stays together.

In the Food guide, keep the safety plan practical: name the next lower sleeping point, local contact, transport option and insurer process. Do not rely on a helicopter, phone signal or fixed schedule as the only response to a problem.

- Save emergency contacts, insurance details and medication information offline.

- Tell the guide early when health, weather or footing changes.

- Treat a safe change of plan as part of the itinerary, not as a failure.
