Dharamsala to Larkya La to Bimthang covers 22–25 km in about 8–11 hr. The route changes from 4,460→5,106→~3,590 m; accumulated climbing and descending make the stage more demanding than the net altitude difference suggests.

Distance, ascent and descent

Plan 22–25 km, approximately ~+700 m of accumulated ascent and ~−1,570 m of descent. These are route-planning estimates; GPS smoothing, lodge location and temporary diversions change recorded totals.

Settlement sequence

Dharamsala → moraine lakes → Larkya La → western moraine → Bimthang

Bridges and trail conditions

A pre-dawn climb crosses frozen ground, moraine and possible snow to the broad pass. The western descent is long, steep and loose; hard snow or ice can make the first descent section the day’s crux.

Water and lunch points

Carry insulated water and a packed breakfast or early meal from Dharamsala, plus accessible high-energy snacks. Do not rely on a staffed stop before Bimthang.

Toilets and hygiene

Use the basic Dharamsala facility before departure. There are no toilets or shelters across the pass; minimise contamination and pack out all paper and hygiene waste.

Mobile network and Wi-Fi

There is effectively no dependable service during the crossing. The guide’s agreed turnaround time, group spacing and descent plan are the primary safety system.

Common pacing mistake

Spending too long at the prayer flags or allowing the group to separate. The pass is not the finish: the exposed, knee-intensive descent to Bimthang takes several more hours.

Arrival facilities

Bimthang has teahouses, hot meals, shared toilets, paid charging and occasional connectivity. Change damp layers immediately, eat, hydrate and continue monitoring anyone who was unwell.
