Lho to Samagaun covers 8–10 km in about 4–5 hr. The route changes from 3,180→3,530 m; accumulated climbing and descending make the stage more demanding than the net altitude difference suggests.

Distance, ascent and descent

Plan 8–10 km, approximately ~+500 m of accumulated ascent and ~−150 m of descent. These are route-planning estimates; GPS smoothing, lodge location and temporary diversions change recorded totals.

Settlement sequence

Lho → Shyala → Sama valley → Samagaun

Bridges and trail conditions

The path climbs through forest to exposed Shyala, then crosses open high-valley terrain with a gentle descent toward Samagaun. Wind, cloud and sun exposure can change quickly despite the short stage.

Water and lunch points

Shyala is the main tea, lunch and refill stop. Carry enough treated water if leaving early or travelling outside the main season because lodge operation is not automatic.

Toilets and hygiene

Facilities are available at lodges in Lho, Shyala and Samagaun. There are no dependable toilets on the open section between Shyala and Sama.

Mobile network and Wi-Fi

Connectivity is weak and weather-dependent. Samagaun may offer paid Wi-Fi or satellite-backed service, but essential documents and maps should remain offline.

Common pacing mistake

Adding a hard Base Camp outing on arrival. The correct priority is lunch, hydration, a health check and rest; the following day is reserved for a controlled acclimatisation hike.

Arrival facilities

Samagaun has multiple teahouses, bakeries or small shops when open, paid charging, basic showers and the broadest upper-route lodge choice. Peak-season rooms can still fill.
