There is no permanent universal trailhead: road condition, vehicle access, permits, construction and the value you place on lower-valley walking should determine the start.
Traditional start at Soti Khola
Soti Khola preserves more of the lower Budhi Gandaki journey and usually adds one walking day before Machha Khola. It suits travellers who want a longer approach and can tolerate road-adjacent sections, heat and extra undulation. It also increases total trip time and exposure to construction traffic.
Machha Khola start
Machha Khola is the common planning baseline used by this site. It removes much of the old Soti Khola road walk while retaining the full Machha Khola–Jagat stage through Khorlabesi, Tatopani and Doban. The final road sector is slow and can stop short after rain or landslides.
Jagat start and Kathmandu to Jagat jeep
A jeep may sometimes reach Jagat or nearby, but a driveable line does not guarantee a comfortable, legal or sensible same-day transfer from Kathmandu. Road damage, checkpoint timing, vehicle changes and motion fatigue matter. Starting at Jagat removes two culturally and geographically useful lower stages and produces a sharper transition into trekking.
Where does the road currently reach?
Road construction and seasonal damage change faster than a static guide can verify. This page does not publish a permanent ‘current roadhead’. For each departure, Amigo Treks should record the driver report, date, vehicle type and last confirmed point at least 48 hours before leaving Kathmandu, then check again on departure morning.
Walking versus jeep sections
- Soti Khola start: most lower-valley walking, longest itinerary and greatest road exposure.
- Machha Khola start: balanced option and the most common modern baseline.
- Jagat start: least walking before the restricted corridor but longest rough-road commitment.
- A damaged road can turn any planned jeep sector into an unplanned walk or vehicle transfer.
Impact on restricted-permit days
The RAP is tied to the controlled-area itinerary and dates, not simply the number of trekking days. Starting at Jagat can change the restricted-area entry date and therefore the fee calculation. Finalise the road plan before the agency submits the RAP; changing dates after issue can create checkpoint problems or require reprocessing.
Alternative footpaths that avoid roads
Local footpaths may bypass portions of the motor road, but they are not fixed tourist infrastructure. Some cross private land, damaged bridges or seasonal landslide terrain. Use them only after the guide confirms the current connection; an old GPX track or 2020 article is not enough.
Seasonal landslide risk
June through September carries the greatest rain-related uncertainty, and damage can persist into October. Even in dry months, excavation, blasting, falling rock and dust affect the corridor. Keep water, food, rainwear and a walking layer accessible in the jeep rather than buried in the porter bag.
