- Larkya La: UNCERTAIN — do not describe it as open or closed without a dated crossing report and current weather check.
How a condition becomes publishable
Every update should state the location, observation time, source name or role, and whether the person saw the condition directly. ‘A friend said it is fine’ is not enough. A driver can verify the road but not the pass; a Samagaun lodge can report local snow but not necessarily the western descent.
Lower-trail and road sources
- Assigned driver: last driveable point, delays, transfers and active road work.
- Guide returning from the circuit: bridge status, landslides and trail detours.
- Jagat lodge/checkpoint contact: lower-route arrivals and permit movement.
- Recent rain matters even when the long-range seasonal description says conditions are normally dry.
Samagaun, Samdo and Dharamsala sources
Use dated lodge observations for snow depth in the village, overnight freezing and whether kitchens are operating. Dharamsala status must be checked separately because it is seasonal, limited and more exposed than Samdo.
Larkya La status protocol
- OPEN: only after a recent full crossing confirms both ascent and western descent, with no new storm invalidating the report.
- UNCERTAIN: incomplete reports, incoming weather, unknown descent condition or no same-week crossing.
- CLOSED/NOT ADVISED: local authorities, guides or lodge network report that teams are turning back or the route is unsafe.
- The assigned guide still makes the departure-day decision even when the public label says open.
Why conditions change quickly
Fresh snow hides the moraine line, wind redistributes snow, sun creates melt-freeze ice and cloud removes visibility. A road can reopen after machinery work and close again after one storm. Treat this page as an update protocol, not a promise of access.
