A driver can verify the road but not the pass; a Samagaun lodge can report local snow but not necessarily the western descent. ## Lower-trail and road sources - Assigned driver: last driveable point, delays, transfers and active road work. - Guide returning from the circuit: bridge status, landslides and trail detours. - Jagat lodge/checkpoint contact: lower-route arrivals and permit movement. - Recent rain matters even when the long-range seasonal description says conditions are normally dry. ## Samagaun, Samdo and Dharamsala sources Use dated lodge observations for snow depth in the village, overnight freezing and whether kitchens are operating. Dharamsala status must be checked separately because it is seasonal, limited and more exposed than Samdo. ## Larkya La status protocol - OPEN: only after a recent full crossing confirms both ascent and western descent, with no new storm invalidating the report. - UNCERTAIN: incomplete reports, incoming weather, unknown descent condition or no same-week crossing. - CLOSED/NOT ADVISED: local authorities, guides or lodge network report that teams are turning back or the route is unsafe. - The assigned guide still makes the departure-day decision even when the public label says open. ## Why conditions change quickly Fresh snow hides the moraine line, wind redistributes snow, sun creates melt-freeze ice and cloud removes visibility. A road can reopen after machinery work and close again after one storm. Treat this page as an update protocol, not a promise of access. ## Budi Gandaki canyon: landslides, bridges and roadheads The lower Manaslu Circuit follows the dramatic, sheer-walled gorge of the Budi Gandaki River. This terrain is geologically active: monsoon rains and winter freeze-thaw cycles frequently trigger rockfall and landslides between Machha Khola, Tatopani, and Jagat. Over the past decade, engineered cantilever cliff walkways and modern steel suspension bridges have significantly improved safety and bypassed unstable landslide scars. Roadhead access has extended: rough dirt jeep tracks now connect Arughat to Machha Khola and occasionally Jagat during dry winter and spring months. However, monsoon downpours quickly wash out unpaved tracks; trekkers should expect rugged 4WD transfers from Kathmandu (taking 7 to 9 hours) and always follow the lead guide's instructions when crossing active scree zones. - Stay alert to overhead rockfall risks in narrow canyon stretches between Machha Khola and Jagat. - Cross suspension bridges one party at a time and yield right of way to laden mule trains on the inside wall. - Expect bumpy, slow 4WD jeep transport between Kathmandu and the Budi Gandaki roadhead. - Carry a lightweight climbing helmet or sturdy cap if trekking during early spring thaw or post-monsoon. ## Larkya La (5,106m) snowpack, moraine and summit timing Crossing Larkya La is the physical and meteorological climax of the Manaslu Circuit. The pass crossing begins with a pre-dawn departure (usually 3:30 AM to 4:30 AM) from Dharamsala (4,460m) to ascend across frozen lateral moraines and glacial snowfields before intense afternoon winds and solar melting destabilize the pass. In early spring (March–April) and late autumn (November–December), the eastern approach and western descent to Bimthang can be covered in deep hard-packed snow and hidden ice. Wearing slip-on microspikes or light crampons is mandatory for secure footing on steep switchbacks. The descent to Bimthang involves dropping 1,400 vertical meters over loose rock and moraine, demanding knee stability and trekking poles. - Depart Dharamsala before 4:30 AM to clear the pass summit before afternoon winds build. - Pack microspikes and gaiters for icy moraine stretches and seasonal snowpack on the pass. - Use dual trekking poles to negotiate the steep 1,400m rocky descent from Larkya La to Bimthang. - Protect eyes against snow blindness with Category 3 or 4 UV-blocking glacier sunglasses.
