## Daily distance method

Walking stages commonly range from about 8 to 22 km. The longest kilometre count is not always the hardest: altitude, steps, river crossings, snow and descent angle change the effort.

## Why published totals differ

- Machha Khola or Soti Khola starting point.

- Dharapani, Tilije or Besisahar finishing point.

- Inclusion of acclimatisation hikes and Base Camp.

- GPS smoothing and switchback measurement.

## Use distance to compare stages, not to judge the whole trek

A total around 170–180 km can change with the roadhead, exit point, side trips and GPS method. The useful question is how far, how high and how technical each day's terrain feels.

- Verify whether the quote starts at Machha Khola or a later roadhead.

- Check whether Manaslu Base Camp, Birendra Lake or another side trip is counted.

- Separate road distance from walking distance.

- Compare ascent, descent, steps, bridges and exposure alongside kilometres.

## The pass day is a different workload

A shorter distance can still be the hardest stage when it combines high altitude, cold, uneven ground and a long descent. The guide should set the pace and turnaround from health, weather and daylight rather than the kilometre target.

- Keep warm layers, water and food accessible.

- Do not race because the group has a fixed endpoint.

- Ask how a slower trekker or an early descent is supported.

## Questions before accepting an itinerary

- Daily Profiles: Walking stages range from 5 to 7 hours; Dharamsala (4,460 m) is the highest sleeping elevation.

- Trailhead Boundaries: The trekking trail begins at Machha Khola and finishes at Dharapani where the road network resumes.

- Acclimatisation Hikes: Rest days in Samagaun include acclimatisation hikes to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m) or Birendra Lake.

- Delay Contingency: Schedules protect backup nights in Pokhara or Kathmandu to absorb road closures without missing flights.

- Route Distance: The 177 km circuit distance reflects actual trail walking including acclimatisation day excursions.
