How to choose the right duration
The 13-day circuit is efficient but leaves little margin for road delays or recovery. Fourteen days adds breathing room; fifteen days is the most balanced choice for many trekkers; sixteen days is preferable when adding a fuller Manaslu Base Camp hike, travelling in marginal weather or connecting to a fixed international flight.
Walking times are estimates for a steady group in dry conditions. Distances and elevation figures vary slightly between GPS devices and map editions, so use them to plan effort rather than as survey measurements.
Acclimatisation strategy
- Sleep at progressively higher villages rather than driving or walking too high too quickly.
- Use Samagaun for an active acclimatisation hike to Birendra Lake, Pung Gyen Gompa or part-way toward Manaslu Base Camp.
- Retain a second lighter day at Samdo; gain height slowly and return to sleep lower.
- Do not ascend to Dharamsala with worsening headache, nausea, unusual fatigue, dizziness or poor coordination.
Meals, lodges and trail conditions
Most nights use family-run teahouses with twin rooms, shared toilets and a dining room. Breakfast and dinner are normally eaten at the lodge; lunch is taken at a village on the trail. Options narrow above Samagaun, while Dharamsala has the simplest rooms and the least dependable water and charging.
The lower route mixes rough jeep road, stone steps, suspension bridges and humid river paths. Higher stages include yak trails, moraine, snow patches and a long descent from Larkya La. Trekking poles and accessible layers matter most on pass day.
Road-transfer contingency
Kathmandu–Machha Khola and Dharapani–Kathmandu travel times change with construction, traffic, landslides and vehicle transfers. Keep one spare day in Kathmandu, carry water and food for delays, and avoid placing an international departure on the evening you leave Dharapani.
Pass-day preparation
- Confirm the forecast, trail report and group health with the guide the evening before.
- Pack headlamp, insulated gloves, shell, warm layer, sunglasses, water and high-energy food at the top of the daypack.
- Start early enough to cross in the safest weather window without racing.
- Agree on turnaround and descent decisions before leaving Dharamsala.
Side trips and alternative versions
- 14 days: add one road buffer or a gentler first trekking day.
- 15 days: retain both acclimatisation days and a post-trek buffer.
- 16 days: allow the longer Base Camp/Pung Gyen option plus road contingency.
- Tsum Valley extension: usually adds about 5–7 trekking days and requires its own restricted-area permit.
