Samagaun to Samdo covers 7–9 km in about 3–4 hr. The route changes from 3,530→3,860 m; accumulated climbing and descending make the stage more demanding than the net altitude difference suggests.

Distance, ascent and descent

Plan 7–9 km, approximately ~+420 m of accumulated ascent and ~−90 m of descent. These are route-planning estimates; GPS smoothing, lodge location and temporary diversions change recorded totals.

Settlement sequence

Samagaun → upper Budhi Gandaki pasture → Kermo Kharka area → Samdo

Bridges and trail conditions

A broad, exposed high-valley path follows yak pasture and mani walls before crossing the river and climbing to Samdo. The gradient is manageable, but wind and altitude can make the stage feel harder.

Water and lunch points

Carry treated water from Samagaun. Seasonal herder stops cannot be relied upon; lunch is usually taken after reaching Samdo.

Toilets and hygiene

There are no dependable public toilets between the villages. Samdo teahouses have basic shared facilities that may freeze overnight.

Mobile network and Wi-Fi

Mobile service is generally absent or intermittent. Paid lodge connectivity may work briefly; do not plan calls that affect permits, insurance or transport for this stage.

Common pacing mistake

Turning a short transfer into a fast walk followed by a strenuous afternoon climb. Maintain an easy conversational pace, eat lunch and assess health before any optional movement.

Arrival facilities

Samdo has a small number of basic lodges, limited menus, paid charging and very limited communications. Confirm the next day’s acclimatisation plan and Dharamsala status.
