Who makes the crossing decision?
The licensed guide makes the operational decision with the group after considering recent crossings, weather, snow, visibility, team health, lodge reports and safe turnaround time. Local authorities or lodge operators may also advise against the pass. Client preference cannot make unsafe terrain acceptable.
Waiting in Samdo
Samdo is generally the better waiting point because it is a permanent village at a lower altitude than Dharamsala, with more shelter and food. Wait only when a short weather improvement is plausible, beds and supplies are available, nobody needs to descend and the permit/flight schedule has room.
Waiting in Dharamsala
Dharamsala is a basic seasonal high camp, not a comfortable storm base. Limited beds, food, water, toilets and heat make an indefinite hold unsafe. If snow is building, the lodge is closing or a trekker has altitude symptoms, descending to Samdo is usually safer than waiting higher.
Returning through the Budhi Gandaki route
A full retreat reverses the route through Samdo, Samagaun, Lho, Namrung, Deng and Jagat toward the available roadhead. The group must not assume the road still reaches the same point used at the start. The agency should contact drivers while the team descends.
How many extra days are needed?
A one-day wait plus a retreat can add roughly two to four or more days, depending on where the decision is made, walking speed and road access. Turning back from Dharamsala takes longer and carries more altitude exposure than deciding in Samdo. Two contingency days are a minimum planning buffer, not a guarantee.
Food and lodge availability
Extra nights depend on lodge stock and bed capacity. In winter or after a major storm, high lodges may be closed or conserving supplies. Carry emergency snacks and cash, but do not stay high solely because the group has food.
Insurance and helicopter limits
Insurance may cover evacuation for a documented medical necessity under policy terms; it usually does not provide a taxi flight because a pass is closed or a traveller will miss a flight. Cloud, wind, visibility, landing space, daylight, aircraft availability and insurer authorisation can prevent rescue.
Missed flights and financial responsibility
Book a flexible international ticket where possible and keep at least two Kathmandu contingency nights. Confirm in writing who pays for extra lodges, guide/porter days, changed vehicles and hotel nights. Natural-hazard costs are commonly the traveller’s responsibility unless the contract says otherwise.

- Carry cash and insurance contacts offline.
- Do not book an international flight on the planned road-exit day.
- Define the cost of extra staff and lodge days.
