Clarify whether the program is instructional, a guided ascent for experienced climbers or a full team expedition. - Ask for the required prior experience and whether a skills assessment is included. - Train for efficient transitions while wearing gloves, harness, helmet and a pack. - Keep enough time for acclimatisation and a weather-dependent summit attempt. ## Approach and camp strategy The expedition normally approaches through the Khumbu, allowing staged acclimatisation before climbing. Higher camps and route conditions may be affected by snow, rockfall, fixed-line work, traffic and seasonal maintenance. Obtain the current operator brief before departure. ## Technical skills and equipment The right equipment only helps when the climber can use it efficiently. A qualified instructor or guide should assess the exact systems required for the route and season. - Crampon movement on steep snow and ice, ice-axe use and self-arrest. - Fixed-line ascender and descender systems, rappelling and rope etiquette. - Belaying, protection, exposed-ridge movement and communication in high wind. - Technical boots, crampons, harness, helmet, gloves, layers, headlamp and personal emergency kit. - A sleeping system and high-camp routine that work when cold, tired and dehydrated. ## Support, permits and cost questions Ama Dablam packages vary widely in whether they include instruction, personal climbing support, high-altitude staff, equipment, oxygen, camps and rescue coordination.
