Choosing the optimal season for a mountaineering expedition in Nepal depends entirely on the specific mountain, its geographic aspect, and wind exposure. ## Plan around a summit window

The approach and acclimatisation can take weeks before the team gets a safe summit opportunity. Protect food, fuel, accommodation, permits and transport for a delayed window.

## Travel dates are not summit dates

- Keep international flights after the return buffer, not immediately after a planned summit day.

- Add road or flight flexibility for the approach and departure.

- Check the mountain forecast, avalanche information and route reports with the expedition team.

## Season depends on the mountain

Spring is common for many high-altitude expeditions and autumn can offer useful post-monsoon conditions, but the exact route, snow, wind, permit calendar, infrastructure and forecast decide the window. A country-wide season label is only a starting point.

## Spring season (April–May): The grand 8,000m window

Spring is the classic climbing window for the highest peaks in the eastern Himalayas (Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Annapurna I). As the subtropical jet stream migrates north toward the Tibetan Plateau in early May, a temporary period of light winds settles over the 8,000-meter summits. Temperatures are steadily warming from winter lows, reducing the risk of severe frostbite.

The snowpack during spring is generally consolidated on high glaciers, though daytime solar heating can trigger wet snow avalanches on south-facing couloirs in late May. Base camps are bustling communities with extensive shared fixed-rope coordination and synchronized weather forecasting.

- Warming temperatures: Higher daytime temperatures reduce frostbite risks during summit night pushes.

## Autumn season (September–October): Clean air and stable post-monsoon ridges

Autumn is the premier season for west-central Nepal peaks (Manaslu, Himlung, Dhaulagiri) and technical granite towers like Ama Dablam. Once the summer monsoon withdraws in mid-September, the atmosphere is scrubbed completely clean of dust, delivering crisp, razor-sharp visibility and stable high-pressure ridges.

The primary challenge in autumn is rapidly dropping temperatures. By late October and November, winter winds begin to accelerate and temperatures above 7,000m can drop to -30°C. Ama Dablam thrives in late October and November because its lower elevation (6,812m) and steep rocky Southwest Ridge are snow-free and dry, offering optimal rock friction.
