Road transfers, trail conditions, bridges, weather, porter systems and resupply affect the amount of energy available for climbing. - Ask for the current roadhead, walking route, camp list and baggage plan. - Confirm how food, fuel, tents and technical equipment move to base camp and higher camps. - Keep a buffer for road, weather, illness and route changes before climbing begins. ## Camps, rotations and summit plan The team normally uses progressive rotations between base camp and higher camps to adapt to sleeping altitude and carry equipment. Treat the operator brief and current route report as controlling documents. ## Technical preparation and acclimatisation Manaslu demands more than endurance. Climbers should be comfortable with crampons, fixed lines, glacier travel, rope procedures, cold exposure, load carries and conservative decisions when tired or unwell. - Train for consecutive uphill days with a pack and recovery after hard carries. - Practise ascender, descender, crampon and ice-axe systems with the equipment you will use. - Discuss altitude history and medical conditions with an appropriate clinician. - Ask how the team responds to persistent headache, breathlessness, confusion or poor coordination. ## Permits, support and total cost A Manaslu proposal should be itemised because remote approach logistics and high-altitude support can create a large difference in the final price. - Peak permit, conservation or restricted-area permissions and liaison requirements. - Approach transport, accommodation, meals, porters, base-camp staff and communications. - Guides, high-altitude staff, fixed ropes, camps, oxygen and medical resources. - Personal equipment, insurance, evacuation, extra nights, tips and delayed transport. - Contingency for route changes, weather holds, illness and an extended return. ## Risk management on a remote mountain Remote terrain can make rescue slower and more complicated than a city-based emergency. The team should explain how it monitors weather, route hazards, symptoms, communication and evacuation from the approach as well as the upper mountain. - Carry insurance, emergency contacts and permit documents offline. - Ask which hospital, rescue provider and local coordinator are used in an emergency. - Understand where a helicopter may not be able to land and when a walking descent is required. - Agree that the leader can stop the attempt for route, weather or health reasons. ## The Northeast Face route and the True Summit ridge debate The expedition begins with a trek from Dharapani or Soti Khola through the beautiful Gurung and Tibetan-heritage villages of the Manaslu Conservation Area (Samagaun at 3,530m), establishing Base Camp at 4,800 meters on the moraine above Birendra Lake.
