Moisture-laden clouds traveling north from the Indian Ocean are forced upward, dumping torrential rain on the southern foothills, but cannot cross the 8,000-meter wall. North of this divide, Upper Mustang (the ancient Kingdom of Lo) and Upper Dolpo receive less than 200 mm of annual precipitation. From June to August, while Kathmandu experiences daily rain, Mustang and Dolpo enjoy clear blue skies, warm sunshine, and blooming mustard and buckwheat fields. To reach Mustang or Dolpo, travelers must transit through the wet southern foothills. Flights from Pokhara to Jomsom (the gateway to Mustang) face frequent morning cloud delays, while the road between Beni and Jomsom can be blocked by mudslides. Build generous contingency buffers (at least 2 days) into your itinerary. In lower foothill forests below 2,500m, wet vegetation harbors leeches (Juka); carry a small pouch of salt or insect repellent.
