# Mustang Travel Guide: Lower vs Upper Mustang, Jomsom, Permits and Seasons

Mustang is not one interchangeable trip. Lower Mustang is a road-and-village corridor around Jomsom, Marpha, Kagbeni and Muktinath; Upper Mustang is a restricted-area journey toward Lo Manthang with different permits, cost and support. Choose the region before choosing a vehicle or itinerary.

## Road, flight or trek

A flight to Jomsom can save a road day but creates a weather and baggage dependency. A jeep gives more luggage flexibility but can be rough and dusty. A walking-focused route adds village depth and effort. The written itinerary should state every roadhead, vehicle handover, highest overnight and fallback.

- Keep Kathmandu buffer nights around Jomsom flights.

- Verify whether a road is used as access, sightseeing or both.

- Do not use a Lower Mustang plan as proof that Upper Mustang access is open.

## Season and operating reality

Mustang's rain-shadow geography makes it a possible monsoon choice, but wind, dust, landslides on approach roads, flight cancellations, cold and winter closures still matter. Spring and autumn are popular; winter needs named operating accommodation and transport, not a generic dry-season claim.
