A porter-guide is not automatically the same as a licensed trekking guide; verify licensing and TIMS issuance with the registered agency. ## Before departure - Send the agency a passport copy and exact route. - Check whether the trek crosses a restricted area or conservation boundary. - Keep permits accessible at checkpoints and carry an emergency contact. - Clarify contingency procedures for permit modifications and road disruptions. ## Documents that may apply TIMS is a trekker registration document issued through the current agency process for listed routes. National park and conservation-area permits cover places such as Sagarmatha, Langtang, Annapurna and Manaslu according to the authority responsible for that area. Restricted-area permits apply to selected routes and may require a licensed agency, guide and specific route dates. Some municipalities or rural areas collect a separate local entry fee or issue a local card. The name, price and process can change, so do not rely on a permit list copied from an old blog. The agency should show which authority issues each document and whether the cost is included in the package. - Send the agency your passport details and exact route, including side trips. - Ask whether the trek crosses more than one protected or restricted area. - Keep permit copies and emergency contacts accessible at checkpoints. ## Check the agency and contingency plan For major routes, a porter-guide is not automatically the same as a licensed trekking guide. Ask for the guide's name, license or agency relationship, group size and the process for issuing TIMS. A registered agency should be able to explain how it corrects a wrong date, route change or missing document. Permit fees are only one part of a legal and safe trek. Confirm insurance, evacuation coordination, staff coverage, accommodation and transport separately.
