# Pokhara Travel Guide: Lakeside, Sarangkot, Mountain Views and Trek Starts

Pokhara (820m) is Nepal’s premier adventure capital and leisure haven, nestled beneath the dramatic Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Set along the shores of serene Phewa Lake, Pokhara serves as the direct launchpad for world-famous treks (ABC, Annapurna Circuit, Mardi Himal, Poon Hill) and offers thrilling adventure activities including paragliding, ultralight flights, zip-lining, and mountain biking.

## A practical two- or three-night plan

- Arrival day: settle into Lakeside, check the next transport and walk only as far as the group wants.

- Full day: use Sarangkot for a clear early morning or choose the lake, museum and a lower-pressure neighbourhood day.

- Optional third night: add World Peace Pagoda, Davis Falls and Gupteshwor, a short walk or an adventure activity with a written cancellation fallback.

- Trek departure: keep the gear and permit work together; do not assume a scenic activity can fit around an early trail transfer.

## Pokhara is a base, not a checklist

Phewa Lake and Lakeside are the easiest places to keep a day flexible. Sarangkot is a viewpoint, not a weather guarantee. Davis Falls and Gupteshwor can be paired when traffic and access work, but they do not need to fill the same morning as a sunrise drive. The city feels better when one block of the day is deliberately left open.

For paragliding, ultralight flights, boating, rafting or other adventure activities, confirm the operator, age and health limits, insurance, weather call and refund terms. A local alternative is more useful than pretending a clouded or cancelled activity will run.

## Arrival, departure and trek logistics

Pokhara can be reached by domestic flight or road from Kathmandu. The Civil Aviation Authority lists Pokhara among Nepal’s domestic airports; an airport listing does not promise a particular flight schedule or weather operation. Leave time for the actual check-in, baggage and onward transfer.

If Pokhara is followed by an international flight, return to Kathmandu with a meaningful buffer. Do not make the same-day domestic arrival your only protection against a missed long-haul connection. For an Annapurna trek, use the route guide to confirm the trailhead, permits, guide arrangement and return transport.

- Keep medication, documents and valuables with you, not in checked luggage.

- Ask who rebooks or arranges ground transport when a flight changes.

- Choose a hotel location by the next day’s departure, not only by the view.

## When Pokhara fits—and when it does not

Pokhara suits travellers who want lake time, mountain context, short walks, adventure or an Annapurna gateway. It is a poor fit as a one-day detour when the road or flight consumes most of the visit. If the trip is mainly Kathmandu heritage or Chitwan wildlife, spend those days in the place that matches the purpose instead of collecting Pokhara in passing.

## Lakeside vibe, Phewa boating, and scenic ridge viewpoints

The heartbeat of Pokhara is Lakeside (Baidam), a vibrant pedestrian-friendly boulevard lined with open-air cafes, live music venues, yoga studios, and outdoor gear shops. Rent a traditional brightly colored wooden rowboat (Doonga) to paddle across Phewa Lake, stopping at the two-story Hindu shrine of Tal Barahi Temple situated on an island in the lake's center.

For iconic sunrise views, head to Sarangkot (1,600m), reachable in 30 minutes by taxi or via the modern Sarangkot Cable Car from Lakeside. As the sun rises, the jagged pyramid of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail, 6,993m) and the massive snowy ramparts of Annapurna I, II, and Dhaulagiri glow pink and gold. On the opposite ridge, hike or drive up to the pristine white World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa) overlooking the lake and city.

Other adrenaline sports include the world's steepest zip-line, ultralight flights around Fishtail, bungee jumping, and whitewater kayaking on the Seti River.

As a trekking gateway, Pokhara provides everything needed before heading into the mountains. Obtain your ACAP permits and TIMS cards at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Damside.
