# Kailash 3-Day Kora: Day-by-Day Stages, Dolma La Pass and Parikrama

The 3-Day Mount Kailash Kora is a 52 km high-altitude pilgrimage circuit around Mount Kailash. Day 1 covers 12 km from Yam Dwar to Dirapuk (5,050m). Day 2 is an extreme, exhausting 22 km crossing of Dolma La Pass (5,630m) down to Zuthulphuk (4,790m). Day 3 is a gentle 8 km walk to Chongdo. Pacing, warm layers, and pulse oximeter monitoring are critical.

## 3-Day Kailash Parikrama Day-by-Day Table

The 52-kilometre parikrama is traditionally completed in 3 days of walking at extreme altitude (4,675 m to 5,630 m), following the clockwise route around the holy mountain.

## Stage-by-Stage Breakdown & Sacred Milestones

Day 1 begins at Darchen and skirts the western flank of Kailash through the holy valley of Lha-chu. Pilgrims pass the giant prayer pole at Tarboche (center of the Saga Dawa Festival) and pass beneath Chorten Kangnyi, a sacred gateway arch. The evening arrival at Dirapuk offers an awe-inspiring, direct view of the sheer, ice-encrusted North Face of Kailash.

Day 2 is the spiritual and physical climax of the circuit. The trail climbs past Shiva-tsal, a ritual site where pilgrims leave a drop of blood, lock of hair, or piece of clothing representing symbolic death and rebirth. The steep scree trail ascends to the prayer-flag-strewn crest of Dolma La (5,630 m), before descending steeply past the emerald waters of Gauri Kund (Lake of Compassion).

Day 3 follows the gentler Dzong-chu gorge. A morning visit to Zutulpuk Monastery allows travelers to view the meditation cave of the 11th-century Tibetan yogi Milarepa, with his handprint pressed into the rock ceiling, before an easy 3-hour walk back to Darchen.

## Guesthouse Amenities & Hydration Realities

Accommodations at Dirapuk and Zutulpuk consist of basic Tibetan guesthouses or monastery dormitories. Running water and indoor plumbing are not available at these remote high-altitude outposts.

- Dormitory Rooms: Multi-bed stone or prefab rooms with basic blankets; a 4-season (-15°C) sleeping bag is strongly recommended for warmth.

- Toilets: Basic outdoor dry-pit squat latrines; carry your own toilet paper, wet wipes, and hand sanitizer.

- Hydration: Guesthouses provide boiled water in large thermos flasks; keep your own insulated water bottle filled to avoid freezing.

- Power & Charging: Solar electricity is limited to 2–3 hours in the evening; carry a large high-capacity power bank kept warm inside your down jacket.

## High-Pass Pacing & Safety on Dolma La (5,630 m)

Starting before dawn (05:00–06:00 AM) on Day 2 is essential to cross Dolma La before afternoon gale-force winds and snow showers develop. Maintain a slow, rhythmic walking pace with deliberate breathing.

- Never attempt the kora without at least 3 nights of prior acclimatisation at 4,500 m+ (such as Saga and Lake Manasarovar).

- Yak and horse support can be hired in Darchen for personal luggage or emergency riding.

- Carry high-energy snacks, thermal flask for warm water, crampons/traction cleats in spring/autumn, and sunglasses to prevent snow blindness.

## Day-by-day trail breakdown: Yam Dwar to Zuthulphuk

Day 1: Drive from Darchen to Yam Dwar (4,675m) and trek 12 km along the Lha Chu river gorge to Dirapuk Monastery (5,050m) over 5 to 6 hours. Enjoy dramatic close-up views of Kailash's sheer North Face.

Day 2: Depart Dirapuk before dawn (06:00 AM) in sub-zero cold. Climb 6 km steeply over boulder fields past Shivasthal to Dolma La Pass (5,630m, 4–5 hrs). Descend a treacherous, rocky scree path past emerald Gauri Kund (5,608m) to the eastern valley floor, followed by an 11 km flat walk to Zuthulphuk (4,790m). Total: 22 km, 9–11 hours.

Day 3: A gentle 8 km downhill walk (2.5–3 hours) through the Dzong Chu gorge to Chongdo, where vehicles meet the group to drive back to Darchen.

- Day 1 (12 km, 5–6 hrs): Yam Dwar to Dirapuk (5,050m), moderate incline, North Face viewpoint.

- Day 2 (22 km, 9–11 hrs): Crux day over Dolma La Pass (5,630m) and past Gauri Kund to Zuthulphuk.

- Day 3 (8 km, 2.5–3 hrs): Easy descent along the river gorge to Chongdo vehicle pickup point.

- Pacing: Maintain slow, synchronized steps; avoid rapid walking that depletes oxygen reserves.

## Cold protection, footwear, and emergency abort options

Sub-zero temperatures (-5°C to -12°C) and biting winds on Day 2 require heavyweight down clothing, thermal balaclavas, Category 3/4 UV sunglasses, and windproof ski mittens. Broken-in high-ankle waterproof trekking boots with stiff soles are vital to prevent ankle twisting on loose descent boulders.

If altitude sickness, vomiting, or ataxia strikes at Dirapuk, abort the pass crossing immediately. Turn around and walk 12 km down the gentle valley path back to Yam Dwar, where a support vehicle transports you safely to your hotel in Darchen to rest with supplemental oxygen.

- Dress in technical layers: merino base, fleece mid-layer, heavy down parka, and Gore-Tex shell.

- Use dual trekking poles to relieve knee pressure by 25% on the steep descent from Dolma La.

- Abort protocol: If experiencing severe AMS at Dirapuk, descend to Yam Dwar; never attempt the pass.

- No civilian helicopter rescue exists in Tibet; emergency evacuation requires overland vehicle transfer.

Useful answers

## Frequently asked questions

Can I travel independently to Kailash?+
For 3-day Kailash kora, foreign visitors to the Tibet Autonomous Region generally need an authorised itinerary, guide, vehicle and permits. Confirm the current rule for your passport and route.
Does the kora cure altitude problems?+
No. The kora reaches high altitude and can be physically demanding. It is not a medical treatment or acclimatisation guarantee.
Can I turn back during the kora?+
A responsible itinerary has a clear turnaround and evacuation plan. Tell the guide early about symptoms and follow the descent or medical advice given.
Can an unfit person complete the 3-day Kailash kora?+
The high pass at 5,630 m is very strenuous. Good cardiovascular endurance and prior high-altitude trekking experience are essential.
Can horses or yaks be hired during the kora?+
Yes. Local Tibetan horsemen and yak handlers can be hired in Darchen for personal riding or luggage portage. Note that horses cannot be ridden on the steepest descent sections from Dolma La down to Gauri Kund for safety reasons.
What is the best time of year for the Kailash 3-day kora?+
May to September is the primary season. June (during Saga Dawa), September, and early October offer the best combination of clear skies, dry trails, and manageable temperatures.
