Other nationality-specific policies may have different conditions. None should be treated as a general tourist visa or as automatic permission to enter the Tibet Autonomous Region. Ask the agency to check the exact itinerary against the current rule before you book. ## Nepal entry needs its own written sequence A Nepal-to-Tibet journey may involve a Kathmandu-based application or group process that is different from entering China from another country. Do not assume a China visa obtained elsewhere will be accepted in the same way, and do not assume a visa issued for China replaces the Tibet permit. Give the operator one consistent set of passport, nationality, entry, hotel and onward-route details. ## Build a document pack - Passport and the validity or blank-page requirements stated by the responsible visa authority. - Visa, visa-free or transit evidence, including the onward ticket and permitted port or area where relevant. - Tibet Travel Permit and additional route permissions, with the exact covered destinations. - Printed itinerary, hotel and agency contacts, insurance details and offline copies for weak connectivity. - A written cancellation or change plan if the policy, border, permit or route changes before departure. ## Gateway 1: Entering Tibet from Mainland China (The L-Visa pathway) If you plan to enter Tibet from mainland Chinese cities (such as Chengdu, Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, or Xining via flight or the Qinghai-Tibet railway), your visa process begins in your home country. You must apply for an individual Chinese Tourist Visa (Category 'L') at your local Chinese embassy, consulate, or CVASC center before departing for China. Once your individual Chinese visa is stamped into your passport, email clear scans of your passport bio-page and visa sticker to your authorized Tibet travel agency. The agency submits these to the TTB in Lhasa to generate your Tibet Travel Permit. The physical paper permit is then mailed via domestic express courier to your transit hotel in Chengdu or Beijing, where you collect it before boarding your train or flight to Lhasa. - Apply for an individual Chinese Tourist (L) Visa in your home country before traveling to China. - Do not list 'Tibet' on your standard Chinese visa application form to avoid unnecessary processing delays. - Email passport and visa scans to your Tibet agency at least 20 days prior to entry for TTP issuance. - The physical TTP is delivered to your mainland China transit hotel before your flight or train to Lhasa. ## Gateway 2: Entering Tibet from Nepal (The China Group Visa pathway) If you travel to Tibet from Nepal—either by direct flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa or overland via the Rasuwagadhi–Gyirong border—a completely different legal regime applies. You CANNOT enter Tibet on a standard individual Chinese visa obtained in your home country. Instead, the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu issues an official China Group Visa. Your Tibet tour agency secures an official invitation letter from the Tibet Tourism Bureau and submits it to the Chinese Visa Application Center (CVASC) in Kathmandu. Travelers must surrender their physical original passports in Kathmandu for 3 to 4 working days and attend an in-person biometric appointment. Warning: Any existing individual Chinese visa in your passport will be automatically cancelled upon issuance of the Group Visa. - Individual Chinese visas are invalid for entry from Nepal; a China Group Visa is legally required. - Surrender physical passport in Kathmandu for 3–4 working days for consular verification and visa printing. - Mandatory in-person biometric scanning (fingerprints and photo) at CVASC in Kathmandu. - Existing individual Chinese visas in your passport are permanently voided when the group visa is issued.
