## Glacial valley landscape and the sacred Black-necked Cranes

Phobjikha is one of the few broad glacial valleys in Bhutan. Perched at 3,000 meters (9,840 feet) on the edge of Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park, its wide, treeless wetland floor is carpeted with dwarf bamboo and meandering streams.

Every winter between late October and mid-February, over 500 endangered Black-necked Cranes (Grus nigricollis) migrate from the Tibetan Plateau to roost in the valley's protected wetlands. Revered by locals as heavenly birds (Thrung Thrung Karmo), the cranes circle Gangtey Monastery three times upon arrival and departure. The Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN) operates a modern Crane Information Centre equipped with spotting scopes.

- U-shaped glacial basin: Broad, scenic valley floor nestled against the Black Mountain range at 3,000m.

- Black-necked Cranes: Over 500 rare cranes winter here annually from late October through February.

- Annual Crane Festival: Held on November 11th in the courtyard of Gangtey Goempa to celebrate the birds.

- Crane Information Centre: Spotting scopes, interactive ecological exhibits, and live wetland camera feeds.

## Gangtey Goempa and the peaceful Gangtey Nature Trail

Crowning a forested hilltop overlooking the valley sits Gangtey Goempa, a sprawling 17th-century monastery founded by Gyalse Pema Thinley, grandson of the great treasure revealer Pema Lingpa. It is the primary Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan.

Starting directly below the monastery is the Gangtey Nature Trail—one of Bhutan's most delightful day walks. The 5 km trail winds gently downhill through blue pine forests, passes traditional stone farmhouses, and skirts the edge of the open wetland reserve over 2 hours, concluding at the valley floor. Nights in Phobjikha are crisp and cold; hotels utilize traditional wood-burning bukhari stoves.

- Gangtey Goempa: Magnificent 17th-century Nyingma monastic complex with intricate timber architecture.

- Gangtey Nature Trail: Easy 5 km scenic walk (1.5–2 hours) offering panoramic valley and wetland vistas.

- Bukhari heating: Traditional wood-burning metal stoves provide cozy warmth in valley hotels and lodges.

- Underground power lines: Electricity cables are buried underground to protect flying cranes from collisions.
