## Tashilhunpo Monastery: Spiritual seat of the Panchen Lama

Founded in 1447 by the First Dalai Lama, Gendun Drup, Tashilhunpo Monastery is one of the four great Gelugpa monasteries of Tibet. Sprawling across the southern slope of Nyima Mountain, it is an immense monastic city comprising massive white-walled assembly halls, golden-roofed chapels, and monk residential quarters housing hundreds of red-robed monks.

The monastery's most awe-inspiring treasure is the Chapel of Jampa, enshrining the world's largest gilded bronze seated statue—the Future Buddha, Maitreya (Jampa). Crafted in 1914 by the Ninth Panchen Lama, this breathtaking statue rises 26.2 meters (86 feet) tall and is adorned with over 300 kilograms of pure gold, diamond gems, pearls, and coral. Nearby, the grand golden stupas (chortens) hold the sacred relics of past Panchen Lamas.

- Thangka wall: A colossal 9-story stone terrace used to display giant silk thangkas during festivals.

## The Shigatse Kora and practical staging for Everest Base Camp

Surrounding Tashilhunpo Monastery is the scenic Shigatse Kora—a sacred cobblestone circumambulation path winding along the mountain ridge above the monastery. Walking this 3 km kora in the morning alongside hundreds of local Tibetan pilgrims spinning prayer wheels offers sweeping panoramic views of the entire Shigatse valley and the reconstructed Shigatse Dzong.

At 3,840 meters (12,600 feet), Shigatse is the indispensable urban staging point before entering the remote Everest region. It features excellent 4-star hotels, regional hospitals with hyperbaric chambers, banking ATMs, outdoor gear stores, and supermarkets where travelers can stock up on bottled oxygen canisters, energy snacks, and warm clothing before proceeding to EBC.
