A high-quality Circular Polarizer (CPL) filter is indispensable to cut surface glare from glacial lakes (Yamdrok, Namtso) and deepen cobalt skies without over-saturating clouds. Sub-zero cold at Everest Base Camp and high passes severely degrades lithium-ion battery chemistry, causing camera batteries to register as dead within minutes. Always carry 3 to 4 fully charged camera batteries inside an inner zippered pocket next to your body warmth. Swap cold batteries with warm ones to instantly revive your camera. - Use Circular Polarizer (CPL) and neutral density filters to control extreme high-altitude dynamic range. - Carry spare camera batteries inside inner jacket pockets close to body heat to combat rapid sub-zero drainage. - Bring a microfiber cloth and lens blower; fine plateau dust and limestone powder coat glass surfaces rapidly. - Drone photography is completely banned for international tourists throughout the Tibet Autonomous Region. ## Monastery photography etiquette and ethical portraiture Photography inside monastery chapels and temple interiors is strictly regulated. At the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, photography inside prayer halls and shrine rooms is strictly prohibited to preserve sacred murals and maintain spiritual sanctity. In other monasteries (Tashilhunpo, Sera), chapels may permit photography upon paying a fee voucher (RMB 20–100) purchased at the entrance. When photographing local Tibetan people, pilgrims, or nomads along the Barkhor kora, always practice ethical sensitivity. Never thrust a telephoto lens abruptly into the face of a prostrating pilgrim. Make eye contact, smile, and ask for permission with a respectful nod or gesture. Showing the captured image on your camera screen is a wonderful way to build warm, genuine human connection. - Strict prohibition on interior photography inside the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple chapels. - Monastery photography fees: Purchase official camera permits (RMB 20–100) where chapels allow interior shots. - Never photograph police checkpoints, military personnel, security cameras, or border control stations. -
